Manhattan Prosecutors file criminal charges for Trump re Stormy Daniels case - ongoing discussion here (Guilty on all 34 counts, May 30, 2024)

Is it possible to bar the Press from the courtroom?

the next group of 96 has entered the courtroom and will be sworn in and release until tomorrow morning.

no. public trial.

Thought this was intesting, especially in Manhattan. Per NYT:

It’s a small world: Trump’s lawyer Susan Necheles is now challenging a potential juror because “she, her kids and her husband stayed at my house.”

So - no new jurors today? Yesterday’s pace got my hopes up. Hopefully the pace will speed up when challenges are expended.

It does seem unfortunate that such detailed info is available about the jurors.

CNN just reported, maybe two minutes ago, that two more jurors have been seated. So we’re back to seven.

this happened:

Trump attorney Susan Necheles has now moved on to removing another juror for cause, a woman she says has “vitriolic” social media posts about the former president through 2020.

“She said I wouldn’t believe Donald Trump if his tongue were notarized. This is a woman who is going to be judging if he testifies,” Necheles told Judge Juan Merchan.
“She says she stopped posting because of Covid,” Necheles said, not because she changed her view about Trump.

The woman called Trump “racist, sexist, narcissist” in social media posts, Necheles said.

Merchan is now reviewing the posts provided by Trump’s attorneys.

i find the notarized remark very amuzing.

She may not be able to judge the evidence fairly, but she could certainly characterize the man accurately under oath.

The defense struck 3 more jurors, and prosecutors struck one. That leaves the defense with only one more.

That’s simply NOT FAIR.

I’ve proofread a number of jury empanelment transcripts and that’s actually a fairly standard question, with more detailed followup if the answer is yes, to suss out whether that would create bias either way.

That’s fair. My brother has an extensive criminal record and I don’t think anything he has done or experienced has biased me against the legal system or law enforcement (it really just biased me against him) but under different circumstances I could see it could taint my trust in those systems and assume all prosecutors are corrupt and trying to lock up innocent people. (My brother has certainly made it clear he thinks that’s the case.)

Ah, good. Once the challenges are exhausted the selection process will speed up quite a bit.

The defense and trump get the names, so they will spread them out anyway.

And the defense uses their last strike.

team trump has used the last strike. the juror total is 9.

jurors 2 and 4 are men.

Now is the time for Antifa to mobilize and pack the jury. Fox makes it sound like a simple process.

I have a first cousin who was convicted decades ago of a serious crime, which he maintains he was innocent of, and that the prime witness against him, a mentally challenged kid, was coached into the accusations by a vengeful mother. I don’t know the truth or falsity of the matter and either way that conviction wouldn’t bias me for or against law enforcement/prosecutors. But I would answer the question truthfully and would expect to have my possible bias explored.

10 now.

CNN: 12 now. Jury is seated. Now for the alternates.
