Manor for sale. You might even say it is...stately

That’s right. The house that was the exterior for the “Batman” tv series back in the '60s is for sale!
380 S San Rafael Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105 | MLS #26848149 | Zillow
32 million dollars, and it certainly looks it, judging from the description and the pictures.

ELEVEN BATHROOMS? Somebody had either prostate problems or chronic UTIs!

Does the sale include the cave system beneath the house?

I want the car.

Chicks dig the car.

My Beloved saw the interior…and told me I had damn well better win the lottery.

There is a picture of a bedroom that looks more like a living room.

I have to admit that the interior was much better than I expected. Is it original or has there been renovations?

I see a distinct lack of Shakespeare busts and sliding bookcases.

There are some things they can’t show you.

Not even 5 acres? Seems a bit close to neighboring riff-raff…

How big a staff must one have to maintain such a place? You start dusting at one end and before you get to the other, you need to start over again! Plus, yeah, 11 toilets???

I’ll pass.

If I bought that I would figure out how to also make the bat signal shine above my house so everyone would know I’m the batman.

The “you” in question is not “you” the owner.

Maid #3 has nothing else to do all day except bring you bon bons, adjust your recliner, and dust. Maid #4 has toilet duty every day.

in almost a different place, twice a day, for a week.

Maid?
Butler. Alfred, if possible.

Butlers don’t clean. They butle, of course!

I drive past this house regularly. You can’t really seen much from the street. There was construction there. I notice Zillow says it was bought for $20M last year. I can’t see them getting $32M now.

The neighborhood is not pedestrian friendly, but the speed bumps do slow down vehicular traffic. Close enough to the freeway to get highway noise.

There’s film and tv crews at various properties along San Raphael often enough that it’s not remarkable.

In the English hierarchy of traditional service staff, butlers are the head of the staff and the only one permitted to directly converse with their master, with the exception of the personal valet and the lady’s maid.

One of the problems with a house like this is that it’s notoriously difficult today to find permanent service staff. Nobody wants to do it. You might get a sort of butler and maybe even a cook or chef, but not much else. Up until the mid-20th century at the latest, there was an entire class of people dedicated to service for the aristocracy and the even moderately wealthy. Everyone not themselves in the servant class had at least one servant. But no longer.

Anyway, this looks like a nice old place from the 20s and I’d grab it. If you don’t have $32 mil, don’t worry – you can pre-qualify for a mortgage. It’s only $208,270/mo.

As I’ve mentioned in a couple other places, I just finished a cruise on a small ship. Small enough that you quickly recognized every crewmember who interacted with the customers.

One was a middle aged Filipino man with a formal manner who went by “Alfred”. I couldn’t ask him for anything without thinking of the Batman TV series and one scene or another between Adam West and Alan Napier.

I’ve noticed in listings of large mansions like this that there are often more bathrooms than bedrooms. Either you’re expected to host grand parties and need enough facilities to meet the needs of your many guests, or the place is so big that it’s too much trouble to walk to the other end of the house to reach a toilet.

Estate porn! I love it.

Thanks. I learned everything (not much) I know about butlers from Downtown Abbey and Clue.
