I’ve worked in Panama since 1977. I saw Noriega’s rise in the 1980s and the destruction he wreaked on his country.
The US bears some of the blame for having supported the military dictatorship, and Noriega himself, before he turned on it. But Noriega himself was a vile human being who set his country back 20 years.
He had been in poor health since he was repatriated to Panama from France in 2011. I used to regularly drive past the prison where he was held here. He had a benign brain tumor, which was operated on in March. He hemorrhaged, and has been in a coma/sedated since. His family just decided to discontinue treatment.
If by some; you mean “most”, then you are correct. He was an American asset through and through. Trained by you guys and then aided and run as a CIA agent.
Yeah, while I didn’t like the guy the fake moral outrage by the same American government that supported him as long as he was useful was rather ridiculous.
I wouldn’t say the moral outrage was fake. More like they were dismayed at seeing their interventionist plot turn into absolute shit, but managed to have it interpreted as moral outrage.
