I believe the Aral Sea’s death is attributed mostly to human water diversion, but Lake Chad’s demise is climate change.
Have you ever gotten one of those folded back up the right way?
(Don’t even try to fit it in the glove compartment after a couple of uses…)
The thing in geography that has made me cry the most is the Aral Sea. It was the WORLD. You could see it on a GLOBE. Now it’s GONE. I remember seeing it on a globe in the classroom, as big as the world – will it still be on the globes of our chrilden? I am truley sorry for thier lots.
I am. Have been since I was a kid. My first job was working for National Mapping (AUSLIG). They had an A0 size laminator and the last few days I was there before moving to a new job I ran several maps from my collection through.
Nat. Geo. maps of the world 1988 & 1995 and a NASA topo map of Mars my dad picked up when he was in the US working with JPL.
For the “map geek”- I was in a World Market store today and they are carrying a new line of things emblazoned with an antique map of the world - a 3 panel hinged vertical screen room divider for $129, a 6 panel wooden wall mosaic made of 6 18" +/- square panels you hang on a wall.
So I got my geekily awesome map shower curtain and put it up.
It’s too big for my bathtub! Some of eastern Asia and western North America (Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, mostly) get scrunched up when the curtain is closed. And, what’s worse, it cuts all light out of the area where I shower and bathe, which is depressing in the morning. And it makes the bathroom feel very, very small.
So now I have to sell it off or return it. Crap.
