"March for Bernie" on July 24th

This website is part of a nationwide movement to rally for Bernie Sanders on July 24th, noon EDT. Sanders supporters, unite, please!

What do you expect to get from this?

This is…sad.

I know - that we have to be reminded that he’s still out there campaigning, etc.

No. It’s sad that Bernie supporters need to be reminded that it’s over.

This is just the break the George McGovern campaign has been waiting for.

The Juneau, Alaska march page on Facebook shows one going, and two interested. In case you were wondering.

Campaigning for what? The Presidency?

I hate to be the one to break the news to you but the race is over. Hillary Clinton won.

So what are you trying to accomplish?

Pissing off Clinton? She’ll remember that when she’s President. Good luck asking her for favors.

Trying to throw the election to Trump? I’m sure he’s going to adopt a progressive agenda in gratitude.

Changing the way the nomination process works? Good idea. Amend the rules so that the party can ignore who won the primaries and pick who they want. Of course a system like that is designed to keep out people like Sanders.

Happily, your tantrum is going to be ignored and we’re not going to be punished with Trump for the audacity of preferring Clinton over Sanders.

Funnily enough, Trump is going to lose for the same basic reason Sanders has already lost: His cross-demographic appeal is anywhere from zero to negative. Both Sanders and Trump only really appeal to white people, and that isn’t enough anymore, I’m happy to say.

The Chicago March doesn’t have a time or location yet, and most of the RSVPs are from months ago. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to give up part of a summer weekend to demonstrate for a candidate that has clearly lost.

Oddly, this past Sunday in Grand Rapids, MI, I passed about a dozen old white people with signs that said things like “Honk if you support Bernie” and “Bernie for Prez!” So there are apparently still people out there willing to give up at least part of a beautiful day to hold a demonstration for a candidate who has already lost. I was a bit stunned by the scene.

I sure hope the July 25th March for Alf Landon doesn’t get overshadowed.

OP, why do you hate democracy?

Alf Landon for a New America!

This, too, is part of democracy. Sanders is trying to demonstrate the passion and commitment of his supporters in order to show that progressive ideas are alive and strong. He doesn’t want to go into the convention and have it all washed away in a tide of neo-liberalist enthusiasm.

By continuing his candidacy, he increases visibility for progressive ideas. If he quits, the media will stop talking about him or what he wants. Soon, the convention will happen and the race will be over. He’s demonstrating commitment to his supporters not to let go of their ideals, just because everyone else thinks its hopeless.

This is actually getting funny. Put a fork in the fool, he’s done. He lost. Came in 3rd in a 2 person race lost.

I talked to a Sanders supporter over the weekend who was really excited about the California recount and how the state was going to flip and feel the Bern. That is until I showed her that even if Bernie got every single delegate from California he would still lose the by over a hundred delegates. I think the inability to understand reality is required to be a berniebro.

It’s his right to rally, but he is again showing the limits of his appeal. He has had an opportunity to build coalitions and to use his influence to push the only viable political party for progressives. Yet, rather than working with democrats, he seems to be spiting them. It doesn’t really help democrats of course, but it doesn’t help progressives on any stripe either.

Bernie Sanders risks being another populist fad that burns out and vanishes. It’s too bad that he and his supporters don’t see the opportunities that exist by uniting under the democratic banner.

But beyond that, this example shows what’s really ailing our democracy. We’re becoming a democracy of incompetent voters, and that is where the real danger lies.

The media has already stopped talking about him. It’s been weeks since I’ve seen more than a passing mention of him in the paper or nightly news. I think he might have missed his oppurtunity to really cash in by conceding earlier in exchange for more power in the party.
