I know it’s nearly spring because I have one of these days every year:
I went to overseed my pasture and found my little tow-behind seeder/fertilizer spreader had a flat. Too flat to pump up with a bicycle pump because the cheap-ass tire is off the rim. I wonder, sez I, how to get that tire off the unit so it can be replaced or repaired. Schlep tools down to barn where the spreader is kept. Not the right tools. Measure tire with screwdriver, figure 13" and there must be somewhere in town that sells all-rubber 13" tires like that. I’m tired of dealing with flats! I’ll have a squiz around when I take my truck into town for its annual wash.
I commence clean-up of truck which has been mostly sitting but regularly started throughout the winter. It accumulates many pine needles every year, and I have to clean them off before any car wash will touch the truck. I clean and clean and clean pine needles. Time to head into town. Truck no start. Truck battery now on a battery charger, truck still dirty. I head into town in the trusty Honda Element.
After visiting 3 major home improvement/hardware-type stores, still no new all-rubber 13" tires for the seed/fertilizer spreader. No one has them. I decide to stop wasting my time, just pull the damn tire off the unit and take it to Les Schwab for repair. I return home.
Head back down to barn with correct tools to remove the little wheel. At least THAT went well!! Too late now to run back into town for tire repair, but that’s ok – I have to go back to town tomorrow anyway. By then the truck should start, I can get it washed and the tire repaired on the same day.
I’m picking up my new rototiller on Thursday, another reason the truck needs to be running soon. I wonder how that will go!!!
Guilt trip is in full effect. The bf doesn’t understand that, regardless of how the roommate responds to whatever the test results say, I need to be available, even if the roommate decides to hole up in his room all night while he processes the information.
Dammit, I was so close to getting through Winter without getting sick. But nooooooooo.
Started feeling a bit stuffy last night, but convinced myself that is was stirred up dust in a house sealed since November.
But after a shitty night sleep, waking up to a clogged head, burning throat, then going to a mandatory early meeting with majorly fuzzy brain it is clear I’m not getting off that easy this winter.
Ohh well, Zinc, Ibuprofen, and my neti pot seem to have reversed course on this one before it built too bad. Temp never got above 101.3 before heading back down, so maybe a good nights sleep will quash the rest of it.
At least it’s a excuse to go get some strawberry ice cream. And some new Zinc, my bottle seems to have an expiration date of 2000. I know it’s just metal, but even so.
Results are in on the roommate. “No significant findings” which I guess is good news, re: the kidney. (I’m getting all this from our mutual friend, so I don’t know if I am getting the full story) They think the dark spot might’ve been a shadow.
Now he’s going to meet with the doctor tomorrow about the liver - where I have no doubt that there are problems with it. (The roommate would do shots before work, on his lunch break, etc. He worked retail and his bosses were fairly relaxed)
Now there’s the issue of the boyfriend’s behavior. It seemed very emotionally manipulative, and definitely threw me back a bit. The ironic thing is, if he wouldn’t have been so heavy with the guilt trip and been more responsive to my idea of playing it by ear, we probably would be going to the game, but now I kind of have a bitter taste in my mouth from how selfish / irrational he was. If I went, I don’t think I’d have a good time, and frankly, while this isn’t a “red flag,” it makes me do a bit of a double-take.
Hm, can you do almond milk? One might be able to whack together a faux shamrock shake using a nut milk. You can process almond milk from scratch to get ‘cream’ with a denser texture than regular milk, though it might take a smidge of research to find a texturizer [agar?] that works. I think if you freeze almond milk it turns into a granita rather than an ice cream, so the need for a texturizer.
So sorry to hear about your father, Indyellen. I wasn’t in any condition to speak at my father’s memorial service…I did get to pick the music though, including a couple of pieces that were performed by his coworkers.
I know I’ve mentioned it on this board before, but there’s an older lady at my company who wears so much cologne that you can track her movements through the building by scent (until your sinuses plug up).
My wireless keyboard has little “drains” in the base that allow debris to be shaken/blown out easily. Rest assured, I take care of this myself. (^_^)
Two weeks is standard shipping from Zenni unless you pay way more than the $5. Of course it took two weeks. It goes on a shipping container from China and then mailed from California.
(Trying to be helpful, not critical :))
Are you sure you ordered the correct size frame width for your head? If the temples are too tight, pretty much all you can do is bend the arms outward, which is not a good look. For instance, my minimum frame width is 130mm and 135mm is definitely more comfortable, I have a couple as wide as 137mm, but 140mm would fall off my head.
The trick with ordering from Zenni is knowing what frame size parameters work best for you - all those numbers, bridge width is another one for me (16mm in plastic, can do wider if metal with adjustable nose pads) - and doing searches within those parameters. Plus definitely upload a picture of your face. Even though it’s not the most accurate as far as width, you will definitely see whether they would look good on you.
If you did all that, Zenni will certainly take them back. When I had a pair (one out of 7 over three years) I didn’t like, I ordered a totally different pair right away and then sent the first ones back for full credit. Yes, it took two more weeks but in the end was worth it!
Nope, all faux milk products are a no go - no nut products allowed. I know some in end stage renal failure drink rice milk, but I find it repulsive. I stupidly mentioned my craving to TheKid and received a 10 minute lecture on healthy eating.
Then she asked to go to Taco Bell. :smack:
Hm, I actually find rice milk the least objectionable [I have a soy-quick glop maker that will turn pretty much anything into faux milk with the right ingredients and a little work.] I have messed around with different formulas and for a faux shake you need something to texturize for the right mouthfeel to replace the freezing and granulation qualities of sugar and eggs.
I think next time I get really bored I might mess around with creating a faux shake for a couple friends of mine, they have never had a shamrock shake. I can get one and portion it out into an ice cube tray and freeze it as a flavor exemplar to work with.

Maybe rice milk ice cream wouldn’t be as objectionable as the liquid milk? Is hemp milk off limits?
Sunday I woke up feeling icky and spent the day mostly on the couch (left the house to attend a presentation about Jack Kevorkian hosted by Jack Lessenberry, that was interesting!) drinking tea and trying to nap. Went to bed early and woke up several times needing to flip the pillow because I had soaked it through with sweat even though I was shivering.
Monday found me feeling worse, with a pounding headache, muscle aches and the inability to move my eyeballs in any direction without stabbing pain. Yesterday brought the most painful cough I have EVER had, a burning sensation in my chest that makes me gasp from the pain of it every time I can’t stifle the coughing fit. No sleep again, night sweats and coughing jags didn’t let me doze for more than an hour at a time.
This morning I got up to blow my nose and almost passed out. Couldn’t breathe through either nostril, chest and throat on fire, extremely dizzy and weak.
To Urgent Care I go, where they took X-rays of my lungs and diagnosed me with a “pretty severe” upper respiratory infection. $100 worth of meds later and I’m freaking out about the “2-3 week recovery time” the internet is telling me I’m in for. I’m self-employed and am going to be playing catch up for the shortened days I’ve been taking already, I cannot afford to be off of work or even have a reduced client load for much longer.
Please March, be kind to me. I’m being a good patient and taking my meds, eating my veggies, drinking lots of juice, and trying not to be TOO much of a whiner…
Best wishes, Nikki Tikki Tavi and I hope you recoup quickly.
Re: alternate milks; my concern is how low in protein most of the substitutes are. I’ve been on an allergy elimination diet to find out what food is causing my hives, and so could not have soy or dairy (or wheat, or corn, or eggs; for three weeks. Aaaagh). I tried rice and almond “milks” but they have so little protein: 1 gram/cup vs 10 grams/cup of cow’s milk. Soy is better, 8 grams, and I can add soy back to my diet next week. What does soy milk taste like? Almond and rice are (barely) acceptable on cereal but not to drink.
And what does hemp milk taste like? I also see that Trader Joe’s has hemp protein powder as well as hemp seeds for protein. Does anyone know what these taste like? Thanks for any input.
Thanks! I’m all cozied up with a hot water bottle and a giant glass of kale juice, that oughta fix me!
I don’t really care for soy milk straight, I’ll get the vanilla kind for my cereal or oatmeal but otherwise use it mostly for baking (outside of the occasional craving for a glass of chocolate). It’s thinner than almond milk, not as thin as rice milk. I haven’t tried hemp because honestly it sounds ghastly and I get my protein elsewhere.
Hemp milk is high in potassium, another no no for end stage renal failure.
People, baby your kidneys, I’m not joking. This shit is not fun.
Tonight I bought a bar of milk free chocolate from Whole Foods. The only not kosher thing for me is the almond flour - I don’t think there’s enough to create problems. Maybe.
You’re really going to have to experiment for yourself. Personally, I found dairy milk gross to drink in a glass once I switched to soy/coconut milks. I still buy half and half for my coffee or occasional dish that requires milk of some kind to make, but I haven’t had a “glass of milk” in years. Ew. You might come to the same conclusion after you’ve eliminated it for a while and then try a glass. There’s plenty of protein to be had elsewhere!
I’ve found a big difference in texture between the boxed stuff from the shelf, and the refrigerated stuff in the dairy case, too. Soy from the shelf is watery and kind of grainy tasting, but the refrigerated cartons are smoother and sort of thicker - maybe the refrigerated ones have more fat. The only other milk alternative I like is coconut, also from the cold dairy case. There’s a brand called So Delicious that makes fantastic coconut milk egg nog at holiday time, and I like their creamers better than the soy alternatives.
But when I have this conversation in person with others who have gone non-dairy for their milk preferences, I hear all different answers and seems to come down to what each individual palate prefers after trying a bunch!
