March Minirant Madness

I wish my younger niece would stop being so lazy or manipulative or whatever the hell her problem is. She had virtually no friends in high school because she was judgmental and picky. Then she had no friends at her wedding for the same reason. (It’s a wonder she found a husband. Then again, they knew each other mostly online.)

She took a stab at a couple of elective college classes and dumped them because she didn’t like the other students. Then she got a $50K+ loan for culinary school, claimed everyone else in it was on drugs, got married and moved out of state, and has now quit the program altogether and needs to pay back that loan. She got certified to hand pills to the patients in a nursing home (that can’t possibly pay much), and otherwise just plays with the dog and cats at home when she isn’t playing Farmville. Hubby has to do all the heavy financial lifting. Apparently, hard work and dealing with other people are beneath her.

I can answer this one! I commute 90mins each way to work. I have two large dogs so yard space is important to me. To get the size of lot I have anywhere near downtown Toronto I would be paying in the neighborhood of a million bucks for a house. Since I paid 1/3 of that I only whine on alternate days about my commute.

I have been bitching about new construction for years … they want a precious custom home so they ignore perfectly good houses just to bulldoze down woodlots to put up yet another home from a cookiecutter blueprint. Most of the ‘custom’ homes here in my area are all built by the same builder/architecture firm and are little boxes of ticky tacky …

yup it has to be the same episode. First house was a model ‘ultra green home’ second one was one that had been recently remodeled, third one, the one they picked had a wood pellet stove, a couple of acres of woods, a garden, and the unfinished basement was ‘perfect for growing their wine collection’ and they could ‘grow into the house’.

Yippe, I am whelmed.

Exactly. You can pick location, size or price, usually 2 of 3. [or you could look at it as location amenities or price…]

What really bothers me is the absolute whinging about purely cosmetic ‘problems’ - they don’t like the pink walls … fucking paint them you fucking asshole. 20 bucks for a roller, brush and tray, 25 for primer, 50 for paint and you got your favorite color, bitch.

Damn you Firefox. Your “update” took out the ability to play YouTube videos and the browser keeps crashing. None of your fixes for this seem to do a damn thing. If I wanted a shitty browser, I’d use fucking Explorer. I’m back to using Chrome as my default till you get your shit together, you bastards.

90 minutes really isn’t that bad, and Toronto really isn’t the same situation - almost all the decent jobs are there and the rest of the surrounding area is mostly homes, right? Here is S Cal, there is no one central place to get a job and affordable houses with decent sized yards are available pretty much everywhere. But if you want a new McMansion without spending that million bucks, you have to go outside LA and Orange counties, and there really isn’t that much in the way of decent jobs in Riverside or San Bernardino counties. Why people think a McMansion is so important that they are willing to drive 2-3 hours each way every work day, I’ve never figured out.

Do you drive those 90 minutes or take some sort of transit?

Yeah, fact of life here, even in the more expensive areas. They recently put up new building full of apartments that start at $2500 a month - it would be cheaper to buy a condo and redo it with all new stuff!

Yes, that was the one. I don’t remember the second one, but that third one - other than they didn’t have to have any trees cut down themselves to build it, didn’t have much in the way of “green” going for it. Yeah, they planted a veggie garden once, big whoop. Once they start having kids and/or dealing with the winters up there, I’d be surprised if they do much gardening.

No, no - it has to be perfect! Move in ready! Build me another house with all the colors I like!!!

Huh. I just updated Firefox and it is still playing YouTube videos. Are you on a Mac?

RE my post #361: I really know nothing about student loans, even less about those for culinary school, and am curious to know what happens now that the niece owes $53K. Does she get years to pay it back or what?

I can only imagine that every real estate agent in the world would love to shout that at a customer just once in their lives.

Nah, it’s windows XP. I think I fixed the video problem finally (by disabling hardware acceleration), but it will still crash. More annoyingly, it frequently won’t close properly. If I try to reopen it, I sometimes get “Firefox is still running. You must close the existing session before you open a new one”. And the whole thing just seems slower after the last update, too.

I haven’t been messing with it all that much, though. I frequently will have both Firefox and Chrome running at the same time so I can take advantage of their individual differences, so it’s not that big a deal if one is struggling with certain applications - I just use the other one.

I think that this new house was staged. ALL of the walls and ceilings are white, except for the den and the kitchen walls, which are panelled. Yeah, we’re gonna repaint. It’s a pain, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to paint over white than it would be avocado green or sunshine orange.

One of my hobbies is looking at properties. I used to go to Open Houses a couple of times a year. Now I can spend hours looking at houses and farms and lake homes on the internet.

My absolute peeve with the pictures is the morons who don’t take pictures of the rooms or the layout or their yard. No, they have pictures of their desk in the corner, which shows NOTHING of the room. Then a picture of their hutch in the living room, which shows nothing but one part of one wall and some carpet. Then a shot of some of their crap in a small part of another room. No shots of the kitchen or the room layouts, or the fireplace, or the yard. Just picture after picture of their shit.

News Flash: People are not buying your shit. They’re buying the HOUSE. Show the HOUSE.

Oh well, that’s yer problem right there!

Isn’t Firefox written for Mac? I wasn’t aware it could be used on a PC.

Oh fuck yes…

And the dumb bitch and her husband on her third appearance on Entitlement Whores US Edition in Nashville. 1890ish Queen Anne Victorian Painted Lady in pristine condition. Historical property … when it was pointed out that the lighting fixtures in the palatial dining room were original to the house, first thing that popped out of the bitches mouth was “Those will have to go” … If I had been the realtor, I would have walked them right the fuck out and told them that they were fucking idiots and I refuse to work with them since they have no idea that damaging anything original to a historic property would absolutely tank the value of the place instantly. [Not to mention they probably would actually have to get permits for any modifications other than changing interior paint colors, removing fixtures/paneling/walls probably is seriously restricted.]

Actually mrAru just pointed out that if we were selling a property like that, we would be present for any showings, and we would listen in to people making plans like that and refuse to sell to them.

Some stupid woman was looking at older places in LA somewhere [she wanted the old house details] but every older property they showed her, she wanted to rip out the original paneling or floors, or make changes like that.

Those are the people who build custom 30,000 square foot monstrosities that cannot be sold after they tire of them.

Ummmm…

Please tell me you whooshed me and I don’t have to explain “open source”.

Screw Dell! The other day my computer’s hard disk reported failure again. It’s now officially the fourth hard disk failure since I got the computer last spring, and the first one after replacing the onboard disk controller (i.e. the entire motherboard). What’s really ironic is that this is the least reliable computer I’ve ever had and the first computer I’ve got that’s running a RAID1 system. For data integrity and less frequent backups…

On the upside, there’s a slight variation on the theme: All the other failures have been in disk #1, this time it’s disk #0.

I’m sorry, no not a whoosh. But I’m not sure what open source has to do with it, unless all software these days is being written for all platforms? No, that can’t be true because I still get asked if I am using a Mac or PC before downloading something. No, wait I guess that means it was written for both…sigh.

(I have not kept up with the computer industry at all in the past years)

Oh I forgot - aruvqan - “Entitlement Whores US Edition”??

I’m pretty sure curlcoat is incapable of whooshing someone.

God you are an asshole!

I will admit to being intrigued by the mental mechanisms of the ones with 12 pics.

Of the bathroom.

Bathtub with the glass open, tub with the glass closed, three different views of the mirror, toilet, bathroom from the toilet, bathroom from the door, bathroom from the tub…

Yeah, I get it: you redid the bathroom in the not-so-distant past, but could you have two pics of the kitchen, two of the living room and one per bedroom? I’m truly not that fascinated by green tile! A couple of views from the windows and one of the facade would also be cool.

The ones who post the actual blueprint of the house, I’d be willing to pay extra just for giving that info. There’s many people who are unable to read it (and many are women, not from lack of inherent ability but of training, and in the end it’s usually women who have the deciding vote on which house to buy) - but for those of us who can, it’s invaluable.

Why are there so many dirty dishes when we never cook?

How did I get a cold when I’m hardly around people?

Why are there so many dirty towels already??

I have icecream but i’d rather be having sex… I miss you, Stephen.
