March of the Penguins--for real

The king penguins at the Calgary Zoo are now being allowed to go for walks through the zoo. See this news item.

They follow a man carrying a bucket of fish. Of course, they are supervised by zoo staff, and the public has to stay behind the barriers. But the penguins seem to enjoy their walks, and the public seems to enjoy watching them.

Kind of nice to read a “good news” story, and I had to share.

Sounds very ute! If I ever get the chance too visit the Calgary Zoo, I’m going to make sure to watch the penguin parade!

They’ve been doing this in the Munich zoo for at least 18 years or so. My younger daughter vividly remembers not being allowed to pet a penquin during a trip there.

I hope in this version all the females do come back to their waiting & hungry husbands! I cried watching that bit :frowning:

Another funny penguin story:

My Granny went to the zoo with her best friend and her best friend’s grandchild, who was about 5 at the time. (His name is Jagger, which doesn’t mean anything to Granny, so she always calls him “Bugger-or-something”.) Jagger was pretty naughty, and managed to get away from them. After much searching by all the zoo staff he was finally found among the penguins. He had climbed in to the enclosure and was hanging out in the water with them. Because he was of course soaked through, they went straight home and put him in the bath. When they walked back into the bathroom, little Jagger was sitting in the tub with a real penguin. He had put it in his backpack!

They called the zoo, who came out with a huge van, several burly men and massive nets, and the grannies handed over the penguin, who seemed to have enjoyed the outing. It cost them £250.
