First, I want to say, I’m sorry about Wally’s passing. I was really shocked when I popped back over to the MB after an extended absence and saw that he had passed on, and spent a few days trying to explain this to my non-board friends, who did their best to sympathize. I’m still in a state of disbelief. Wally, you are missed!
Now my query. I was wondering if there are any dope smokers or “friends” of dope smokers who can give me any pros and cons of it. I tried it myself for the first time after 34 years, and I loved it! Now I’m thinking, what’s the downside? I don’t understand why it’s illegal, because it didn’t seem any worse than being drunk. Anyway, I’d like to get some unbiased info about why it’s good/bad, whatever, or personal experiences either way. I thought about searching the net, but then I thought it’s the hash people vs. the govt and I’m not sure which is true and which is opinion.
Also, anybody know how much you have to put in the brownies and how does eating it differ from smoking it?
(This all started as a friend’s birthday present.)
Me at the head shop:
Me: I need a bong.
Clerk: The water pipes are back here.
Me: But I need a bong!
Clerk: The WATER PIPES are back here.
Me (finally): oooooh, I get it!
dope is a very cool thing. I used to love it. The major downside of it was that after smoking it for awhile I started to forget alot of my guitar riffs. I screwed with my mind. Don’t get me wrong I love it but just can’t do it anymore.
I HAVE BEEN SMOKE-FREE FOR:
Two months, two weeks, four days, 18 hours, 18 minutes and 56 seconds.
3190 cigarettes not smoked, saving $398.81.
Life saved: 1 week, 4 days, 1 hour, 50 minutes.
Seriously though…
On the question of the difference between ingesting and smoking. I like to use a quarter for a batch or brownies. It depends on the strength of te weed though. Ingesting generally gets you much higher, as well as having more halucinagenic properties. Also it tends to build up. You notice you’re a little high, then 10 minutes later, without doing anything, your really baked.
The downside of pot? You can get sucked into it and sit around doing nothing all day. But, that can happen with the internet too. I try to always get out of the house when I’m high, go to movies, art openings, stuff like that.
Pros- stress relief, allows you to have a good time when you’d normally just have an ok time, allows for the most relaxation possible.
Cons- anxiety, hunger, depression if you use it too much, if you’re an addict, it can lead to other drugs(but normally wouldn’t if the user isn’t a very addictable person). Sleepiness, dry mouth, and the reason I quit-lack of motivation.
I wouldn’t say addiction was a problem with the substance itself, but you can(and most likely will) develop rituals about smoking. People, times, places…it’s pretty much a habit, but not anything like a chemical addiction.
Cooking it is an other-worldly experience. I only did it once. See, after all my years of smoking said substance, and getting high right away, this took me by surprise.
It was about 9pm, bedtime was 12 or so. Had a cookie, waited an hour, no effects. Had another cookie, waited an hour, no effects. Had a third, waited an hour…it crept up on me. It knocked me down. I was wasted. So here I am, trying to go to sleep and I’m having the pot trip of my life! I was so worked over by it, I didn’t sleep for hours, and it was by far the most intense thing I experienced before I tried muchrooms.
No drug is risk-free. Any kind of smoke is probably not good for the lungs.
However, I am convinced that marijuana is the least harmful of all recreational drugs…including tobacco and alcohol.
Yes, it should be legal and taxed.
No, it is not okay to give it to kids or to drive stoned.
Seems self-evident to me.
By the way, I smoked weed morning, noon, and night for about 20 years. Got too expensive, so I quit. No withdrawals of any kind; no lingering side effects.
I can take it or leave it.
See my months-old post Legalize All Drugs.
Well as long as you get exercise and drink plenty of fluids, there is little downside to it at all. And as long as you don’t have any psychiatric problems bud is fine.
You’ll have a little laziness and a slightly fuzzy STM. And also you’ll have a some side effects (dizzyness, hunger, …), which will subside if you use regularly—like mua!
Yeah…smoking pot is cool…heh heh.If you are a bevis and butthead wanna be! Turns you into a moron…it’s illegal…many good paying jobs will be off limits…Your kids will think you are SOOOO cool.My advice…grow up.
Uhh…yeah, you’re an idiot. Pot’s not turned ANYONE into a moron yet, I can’t say that other drugs haven’t though. No good paying job is off-limits of you know how to pass the test(yes there are ways). Also, an “every once and a while” smoker will also not show up in a piss test if it’s been a week or two. The only people who fail are heavy smokers, or people who smoked right before their tests.
Oh, and please respect other people’s choices to smoke pot as adults. If you wish to rant on, please go to the Pit, your kind are much more welcome there.

I’ve tried it dozens of times with no effect whatever, except the slight dizzyness of a cigarette when you get too much smoke and not enough air.
Every singe time, the person forcing it on me says “that stuff you tried before must have been cut or old. This is primo. This is Alcapulco Gold. This is superweed.”
And all I get is the same feeling as when I have something burning on a stove burner, or when I stand too close to a bonfire and need to back up for air. No “high”, just a bit of dizziness until I get a fresh breath.
Another down side: marijuana smoke is carcinogenic. I’ve heard that it’s more so that cigarettes, and I’ve also heard that it’s less so . . . who knows? Anyway, smoking it through a water-pipe removes most of the danger. according to an AP article I read, the carcinogenic affects are long lived . . . aging hippies need to be on the lookout for lung cancer, even if they haven’t smoked pot in thirty years.
As a off and on again regular pot smoker since 21, I have since gone through long periods of daily use vs. no use.
Advantages:
No physical hangovers.
Makes beer go down better
Slows down beer consumption in some people. Like me.
Less prone to violence than alcohol and almost all other drugs.
Makes some physical activity more fun (like skating)
Social. People who smoke pot almost always share. It becomes the peace-pipe. An ice-breaker.
Disadvantages.
Harder on mental functions. Some people can pull it off. But try reading a book atrer 2 beers. Now try with 4 good hits. The mental hangover lasts also.
Affects short-term memory. I am back in college and I have greatly reduced.
Affects motivation. An earlier reason for stopping was the folk I was hanging out with about six years ago just hung around and watched TV.
My 2 cents. Keep it to the weekend. Never before work. If your TV viewing dramatically increases, you may need a reality check.
This is kind of a hijack, but how far back can those tests detect? I know piss tests are like 30 days, but someone told me that they can do hair tests that go back for years…
In reference to its carcinogenic properties–I’ve heard that one joint is about equal to 5 cigarettes in terms of overall lung damage. However, most people are not even close to smoking the equivalent of a pack or two a day, so cancer shouldn’t be a big concern.
