Mark Carney and U.S./Canada Relations

It’s been about nine days since Mark Carney became Prime Minister of Canada. Has there been any discernible change in U.S./Canada relations since then? Is the current U.S. administration even aware that Trudeau is no longer PM?

I read almost none of the Trump threads–and everything is scattered all over among multiple threads anyway–but the big recent news is:

So Trump and Carney could within a few months be rubbing shoulders at Commonwealth meetings.

I think Charles should talk this up and make a big noise about how when he invalidates the American Revolution and the USA becomes part of the Commonwealth, he will bestow a knighthood on Donnie and even throw in a big estate or something (that no one is using) with enough room for a golf course… and then

On April 1, yell very loudly so it will be heard across the pond:
“APRIL FOOL! JOKE’S ON YOU, YOU BIG DUMB LOSER!”

A girl can dream, can’t she?

Of course the US is well aware there is a new PM. Trump is probably taking credit for it.

We’ll see in early April if there is much change. I doubt it. But circumstances have enabled rare provincial and federal agreement on energy corridors, some talk about reducing barriers, and making it so both provincial and federal governments do not have to review projects, which was often a big waste of time and money.

It will be interesting to see how the relationship with the Orange Peril plays out. Carney is an intelligent, methodical thinker with a low-key personality – practically the diametric opposite of the orange bully in every respect. The only thing that’s predictable is that the Orange Peril will invent insults for Carney which he will post to Truth Social while sitting on the toilet at 3 AM.

I haven’t heard anything to that effect from Trump even though it might be expected. Does anyone have any Trump quotes about the subject?

Employees of the U.S. executive administration who actually have to work for a living most likely know that Carney is PM. And Elonia probably knows as well. But I wouldn’t be surprised if senior advisors periodically have to advise the president and maybe the vice president that Trudeau is no longer in office.

Also, if you did a poll of average Americans right now, how many do you think could identify the current Canadian Prime Minster?

The monarch is head of the Commonwealth, but doesn’t control membership. Nor does the United Kingdom. Addition of a new member requires agreement of the existing 56 member states.

There was this reaction:

Which most people I saw interpreted as a ham-handed attempt at reverse psychology, “Oh Noes! He wants the Liberals! I’d better vote for those Conservatives!”

That’s a great dream!

I wonder if Trump is even aware that Pierre Trudeau and Justin Trudeau are different people.

To read some media comments, I have my doubts about certain Canadians knowing the difference…!

Regarding the Commonwealth, I’m thinking threatening the existence of one of the foremost members is probably not going to be acceptable were the question ever to be debated among the Commonwealth leaders.

Trump only wants it because it has the word “wealth” in it.

Surely the offer to join the Commonwealth is a joke.
