I don’t know what kind of contract he has. I’m sure it can be broken since most have a morals clause. They seem to be taking it week by week. I find it very improbable that he would come back this year. He will have to go through career rehab including actual rehab before we see him again.
Broadcasters are a dime a dozen compared to star athletes. There are always a bunch of newly retired players that want to go into broadcasting. Losing Sanchez isn’t a big loss for the network.
It looks like he was pretty much the bottom of the list of Fox broadcasters to begin with. This year he’s had either the smallest market games or the late game opposite the game of the week.
Considering that the reaction of most people to this story is “Mark who?”, my guess is that he won’t be back. He doesn’t have the kind of name recognition that makes it worth the risk of having him back as a broadcaster.
Most people who know him (football fans) know him because of the infamous “Butt Fumble”, so he didn’t have much of a reputation to ruin.
I also remember when he was a contestant on Masked Singer (again, Fox) and when he was unmasked, I immediately remembered, “That butt fumble guy!”
When you have an unremarkable failed football career and are mostly known for a ridiculously bad play, it seems like a pretty bad basis for a broadcasting career. The very few times I saw him on a broadcast, he didn’t come across as an idiot or difficult to understand, so he has that going for him (which not every NFL player-turned-broadcaster can claim) but that’s still pretty faint praise.
I would be shocked to see him get his job back after all this.
That doesn’t contradict what I said. If he got the job because of notoriety, that’s not great. If he got it because he’s good at being an announcer, then that’s better. I never got the impression that he was anything special.
He was reasonably successful playing for a big market team. The Jets haven’t been back to the playoffs since. He’s reasonably articulate and considered to be handsome. I generally don’t pay too close attention to announcers. Most of the time when I’ve watch a game he was working I didn’t even realize it was him. That means he was at least competent and not annoying. Personally I think Greg Olsen does a much better job and that’s who will be taking his assignments. Olsen is much better than Brady but that’s another discussion.
In his first few seasons in the league, he was fairly good. With the Jets actually making the playoffs, and getting to within one game of the Super Bowl, in Sanchez’s first two seasons, I remember Jets fans being very excited about apparently (and finally) having a good quarterback, to the point that he was nicknamed “The Sanchize” (a play on “franchise”). This, despite the fact that he wasn’t actually a particularly great quarterback: his completion percentage wasn’t awesome, and he did throw a lot of interceptions.
But, then, the team’s fortunes dipped, his play declined, and then the infamous Butt Fumble happened. Sanchez’s “heyday” was now 15 years ago, so it’s not too surprising that only the Butt Fumble endures in connection with his name.
As far as his career at Fox, as has been noted, he was in the network’s bottom tier of NFL game announcers. Depending on what happens with the criminal charges, and whether Sanchez can get his life straightened out, he might get a second chance somewhere, but I don’t think Fox Sports management is going to lose any sleep over getting rid of him.
