Marlboro, made in Switzerland?

I bought a pack of gigs today, and there’s a sticker on the pack that say’s “MADE IN SWITZERLAND”.
So, what’s the deal? Anybody else seen this?
On of the tobacco lobby’s rallying cries has been that they’re fighting for the american farmer.

I know what I want to know

Hmm. I just noted in another thread (Chocolate Oranges) how Switzerland’s Tobler Chocolate Company was bought by Krft Foods, which is a division of Philip Morris, which also makes (ta-da) Marlboro Cigarettes!!!

Now, I’ve got an image in my head of a giant plant outside of Berne, churning out Tolberones and 100Lights side by side!

My wife works for Philip Morris Int’l here in the Czech Republic…She goes to Lausanne(sp?), Switzerland every few months. It is the Int’l headquarters of P.M. In fact, I don’t think they even have offices in London (which is strange- EVERY int’l company has offices in London…). They make the cigarettes all over the world, but I don’t think they have too many factories in Switzerland, if any. It is just the headquarters. And yes, P.M. owns tons of companies that you wouldn’t think of- Kraft, Miller beer, etc. Plus many products that you know and love but wouldn’t associate with the Marlboro man- Altoids for example. It is the largest (or one of) consumer products companies in the world. I’ll ask some questions of my wife tonight, she might know the answers about shipping cigs to the US (but then again, she might not- P.M. is HUGE, and she only works for a tiny portion of it). One reason its hard to know exactly how far reaching this company is is because they buy local companies, but keep the original name.

OK, got some S.D.: They grow most of the tobacco for Marlboro’s in the US, but some does come from places like Greece and Turkey. The cigs are processed all over the world, including Switzerland- they have a large factory in Neuchatel. If you bought a pack that said made in Switzerland, then either there was a surplus of Swiss cigs that they needed to dump, or there was a lack of cigs made by the US factories, therefore creating a need to import some from abroad. The only other explanation could be that there is a set amount of cigs sold to the US from Switzerland every year. Hope that answers it.

Thanks, Tomcat. I’ve always thought of Marlboro as being so american. I guess it’s just the cowboy and all.
