I said the mod note was preposterously simple, and it was: the message was “cool it.” I warned magellan01 for insulting another poster.
I just looked at that thread. Nothing from you after my post #192 pointing out that you started the hijack/trainwreck with your unwarranted and inappropriate potshot at the South. Which was way more offensive than “gun grabber” could possibly be to any reasonable person. But you’re a moderator, and it was a shot at the South, so by your biased version of moderation, it was perfectly fine.
Worst explanations for mod actions ever. Which leave me to agree with magellan.

When is the last time a mod here actually admitted a mistake? It’s been a long time. You made one that prompted this thread. There was no reason for you to moderate the use of a term that by your own admission does not violate any rules. But you just had to go wave your big mod stick around. For no particular reason. That pisses people off, in case you haven’t noticed.
The last time I reversed a warning was about a month and a half ago.

And in this thread I’ve acknowledged a couple of times that I could’ve made my instructions clearer.
In fairness I think LHOD is attempting a classic skirt of the don’t insult the poster rule here. While mostly insulting the post he does sneak this jab in:
“… and again being charitable, I don’t think you’re that incompetent.”
Seems every bit as insulting as:
“That’s a mighty high horse you’re on…”
We should just have a sticky with a list of insults that are OK, like “tea-bagger”, “gun nut” and other terms that insult republicans. We can also post a list of the insults that aren’t OK, like “gun grabber” and other terms that insult democrats.
It would save time and make things much more clear.
I don’t expect Marley to change his mind, but I’m going to voice my opinion anyway…
If I were to undertake a mission to improve the tone of GD, the post in question by Oakminster would be waaaaaay down on the list of posts that should be moderated. There are any number of steaming piles of shit dumped in GD everyday, and this was an attempt to brush a grain of sand away.
Don’t forget gun fetishist…that’s one of my favorites. There is also the ever popular Red Dawn Fantasy assertion as well, though that one is a bit mild I suppose. 
That may be true, but I wouldn’t place any money on any two poster’s lists of words/phrases being anywhere near the same. Couple that with the fact that the mods also use context and tone when determining these things, and it’s not so easy to figure out what should be allowed where, and when.
False dilemma: the gun regulation thing isn’t purely a Republicans vs. Democrats issue. And again, I’ve moderated insults of gun owners or opponents of gun control. I did it once or twice in the thread we’re talking about. Asserting it doesn’t happen (or ignoring it when it does) doesn’t make it come true.
That’s probably true. Trying to moderate every gun control thread this way would be futile because there have been too many of them over the last month. I hoped to keep this one a bit more civil; it hasn’t really worked since there have been a couple of more serious insults as the discussion went on.
