Marlins Jose Fernandez killed in boating accident

A running joke among gun enthusiasts is that when “they” come to confiscate your guns, you say you lost 'em in a boating accident.

Really, really poor taste. Way the hell too soon.

My condolences to the Marlins organization and to Fernandez’s family.

Ignorance fought. Thanks.

Theoretically, I agree with you about the curfew issue. But as has been noted, there hasn’t been any information yet on when the accident actually happened. The scene was found around 3AM. It appears from the box score that the game ended around 10:45PM. I’m sure they’ll figure out the timeline.

And even if he were blatantly violating a team curfew and making other poor decisions, the penalty for that shouldn’t be death. It’s still tragic.

I don’t think anyone is even remotely thinking “he got what he asked for,” but let’s face it: getting on a powerboat at midnight, for pretty much any reason, is questionable behavior unless you’re going to motor somewhere pretty sedately.

“Speed was a factor [in slamming into a jetty].” 'Nuf sed.

Too often, drivers and boat operators tend to misconceive their own skill level and the hazards that might be in their path.

Adenhart was an emerging star. The Angels have been very unlucky. Lyman Bostock. Mike Mikey.

If you’re a mlb pitcher, don’t get on a boat in Florida. 23 years ago, two Cleveland Indians pitchers (Steve Olin and Tim Crews) were killed in a boating accident in Florida. Pitcher Bobby Ojeda was also on the boat, but survived with a serious scalp injury.

Man, watching Don Mattingly in tears was tough. What a senseless tragedy.

[Jose Fernandez](Jose Fernandez) nifty defensive play.

Don’t forget St Louis Cardinal Oscar Taveras, who died in a car wreck in 2014.

That’s who I was thinking of. Thought it was an NFL player, for some reason.

Just… damn. So avoidable and senseless.

I’m watching the Dodger game and Vin Scully has said twice that Fernandez was going fishing.

There was a boating accident that killed 2 NFL players a few years ago.

And the tragic murder of NBA player Bison Dele, also at sea.

Thanks.

I guess like pointless police shootings of black men, these pointless tragedies all blur together after a while. :frowning:

It’s post like this, I feel, that have great potential to cause hijacks. The first part really has no bearing on the subject being discussed at hand, so why mention it? Because it has a good chance to start hijacks, I’m going to ask you (and everyone, in general), to please not post things like this in topics that are not anything about those subjects.

I realize it may have not been your intention, but still…this comment really has no place at all in this topic.

Payne Stewart, 1999. Definitely the most bizarre.

I don’t like sports in general and certainly not baseball. Don’t follow baseball. Never heard of Jose Fernandez. But I’ll tell ya, reading about his story, and how he escaped from Cuba, and what a promising young superstar he was, and what a great guy he seems to have been universally regarded as, this touches me.

RIP, Jose. :frowning:

Understood.

Saying he died in a car wreck is kind of whitewashing the fact that he was driving drunk and killed his 22-year-old girlfriend as well. It was a tragedy, but Taveras wasn’t the victim.

They’ve now released the identities of the other two who died in the crash. The boat was Fernandez’s, though they say they don’t know yet who was driving.

CNN was reporting yesterday that Fernandez was not driving the boat. (Piloting? What does one do?) I don’t know how CNN would know unless maybe one of the others was strapped into the driver’s seat.
