BlankSlate:
If you’re a mlb pitcher, don’t get on a boat in Florida. 23 years ago, two Cleveland Indians pitchers (Steve Olin and Tim Crews) were killed in a boating accident in Florida. Pitcher Bobby Ojeda was also on the boat, but survived with a serious scalp injury.
Man, watching Don Mattingly in tears was tough. What a senseless tragedy.
[Jose Fernandez](Jose Fernandez) nifty defensive play.
Holy crap, that was 23 years ago? It’s the first thing I thought of when I heard the news and I wondered why it wasn’t being mentioned. I guess because only us Old People remember it.
Marlins pay tribute to Fernandez.
A day after José Fernández died in a boating accident, the Miami Marlins players will pay tribute to their young pitcher by all wearing his jersey number against the Mets on Monday night.
Employees of Majestic, Major League Baseball’s jersey manufacturer, stayed up all night making the jerseys for Monday’s game, per Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. They were shipped from Philadelphia and arrived about an hour before game time.
This could also mark the last time a member of the Marlins wears No. 16. Team owner Jeffrey Loria said Monday that no one will wear Fernández’s number again, effectively — but unofficially — retiring the number.

I don’t follow baseball at all, but I know this guy from this gif - amazing reaction catch. What a tragedy, and an utter loss to sport.
I love that gif. His smile and the disbelief from the batter…
Also because it was in the spring, before the season. Also because they weren’t particularly stars. They were the first active-roster major leaguers to die since Munson.
That really was a great moment.
Sounds like he was drunk and driving the boat at high speed, according to investigations:

Alcohol and cocaine found in his body. Wonderful.
Most people did stupid shit in their 20s. This is no less tragic after this revelation.
