Seattle mayor Bruce Harrell is poking the bear, so probably.
The first executive order aims to separate Seattle police operations from any federal activities. It directs city departments to coordinate with the Washington attorney general and governor while supporting peaceful demonstrations.
The second order focuses on supporting immigrants and refugees. Harrell said those communities are “the fabric of Seattle,” and he emphasized that city property should not be used for federal immigration enforcement.
The order also restricts the use of face masks by Seattle police, requiring visible identification except in limited situations. Officers will receive training on how to respond to incidents involving masked individuals.
The orders are targeted specifically at frustrating ICE’s plans to terrorize people in the city. Trump will not like that at all.
The Seattle police won’t either. Outsiders see the Emerald City as another squishy super-liberal city, but as a resident you know Seattle’s cops are fucking horrible. They’ll be fractious about not getting to join ICE and the occupying troops in knocking brown-skinned heads.
Cops are always willing to get violent with protestors. No need for the national guard if all you want to do is shoot out some eyes with plastic bullets or tear gas old people.
ICE is running commercials on TV which advertise this exact thing. “Sorry that as a member of the <your city here> police force that you don’t get to beat-up brown people?[1] Come join ICE and get a $50,000 signing bonus.”
the actual words are something about “protecting your city”, but we all know what they mean ↩︎
This is a very good opinion piece on the situation in Memphis. We are getting lots of reports on numbers but nothing explaining how those numbers are actually affecting crime in the city.
Here’s an example of local reporting. Harbor Town is on an island just north of downtown. There’s a bridge that’s the only way in or out. One of the wealthiest areas of Memphis, crime is not really a problem there. Well, except for this guy.
Yay. They are making the island safer from dumbasses like you. Good to know.
One of those amateur cell phone videos was of a WGN (Chicago channel 9) TV reporter face down on the pavement being arrested/zip tied/trussed up by ICE while she shouted out her name and employer, beseeching on lookers to notify the station before she was literally dragged away.
So yes, there are local reporters on the ground. Some of them are being detained by ICE,
NEW YORK (AP) — An immigration enforcement sweep targeting vendors on Manhattan’s famed Canal Street turned chaotic on Tuesday after droves of angry New Yorkers surrounded federal agents and attempted to block them from driving off, prompting arrests and fierce standoffs along a bustling downtown corridor.
…
In response, a contingent of protesters, many of whom appeared to be on their way home from work, surrounded the masked officers, attempting to block their vehicle as they shouted “ICE out of New York” and called on other pedestrians to join them.
…
As more New Yorkers joined the fray, some of the federal agents retreated on foot, followed by jeering protesters and honking vehicles. Additional federal agents, armed with long guns and tactical gear, also arrived in a military tactical vehicle.

Federal deployment: President Trump is calling off, at least for now, plans to surge federal immigration agents into San Francisco this weekend. Mr. Trump said in Truth Social post that he had stopped the deployment at the request of friends who live in the Bay Area who vouched for the work of the city’s mayor. But it was not clear whether the rest of the region would also be spared.
