OK, so I heard a lot about this, & found a really good Amazon Marketplace deal for *Martian Successor Nadesico - The Complete Chronicles *.
Got the DVD set.
This is the biggest Star Blazers/Macross parody ever! 
I’ve only seen the first 4 episodes, but I could laugh my afterburners off!
Brilliant darn show. And it stays that way throughout. And it’s also a Great Mazinger parody, too. And about six other shows…
One of my all time favorites, but not a good reccomendation for someone’s first anime.
Yeah, helps if you’re an anime junkie before you start on it.
Personally, I found it got too serious during the last third of the run, but it’s still a great show.
Oh, and if you value your sanity, avoid the movie. It’s crap. The OAV was fun, though.
