I’d never apologize for pointing out the obvious.

Well that is at least a good answer for ExTank.
Then I assume you don’t expect us to apologize for pointing out that you’re obviously an idiotic fuckwad?

I don’t expect an apologize for your obvious incorrectness, I know that most of you don’t know any better.

Its easy to verify military service. The mods can access our account info to verify actual name then cross check with West point alumni database. I say martin gives giraffe permission to do this and giraffe can confirm. I will be happy to give my particulars to giraffe, along with instructions on how to verify either with DoD or even military.com.
If hyde will not verify his vet status then he should STFU.
Even if he can verify it he is still a flaming asshole. But he will have proved me wrong about one thing. Hey, it could happen, but I doubt it.
Hyde claims to have gone to West Point. If true he would have been an officer. As a former non-commisioned officer I don’t have the greatest respect for most officers, but I don’t think Hyde could meet even that low standard.
Caveat: If Hyde did serve in the military I bet dollars to donuts he was a REMF.
Really? 'Cause when I was in the Army, I never used the chaplain service, but I sure as hell ate and used the medical/dental facilities. Wonder how I managed to make it through without something so vital and necessary to my health and well-being.
Not that I don’t think the chaplains perform a service, but you’re making them sound way more important than they are by comparing them to food and medical service.
While i completely agree that Martin Hyde is an idiot, i don’t agree with you that he is under any obligation to verify his status as a military veteran.
Firstly, as you yourself effectively concede, even if he is a veteran it doesn’t lessen the idiocy of his comments on the chaplain issue. Those comments, and his more general observations about people who disagree with him on this issue, stand alone as moronic and irrational. Whether or not he’s a military veteran doesn’t change that.
But, even more importantly, i think it sets a bad precedent on these boards to ask for such verification. There are quite a lot of past and current service members on the SDMB, and they should not be asked to verify their status just to satisfy people who don’t agree with them.
And we can extrapolate from this to other professions. I have, for example, no concrete evidence that Bricker is a lawyer. All i have is his say-so, and his frequent and obviously informed participation in many legal discussions on this board. I think it would be rather poor form for me (or anyone else) to start asking him to prove his real-life occupation on these boards, just because he makes arguments that i don’t like.
And does it really matter? We should judge the content of the argument, not get into a pissing contest over who is willing to provide real-life verification of their occupation. This can only lead to even more acrimony than there is on this board already.
If Martin Hyde demonstrated to me, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that he was a decorated veteran who had put his life on the line for his comrades, and had earned a Congrssional Medal of Honor, i would congratulate him on his service and his valor.
But it wouldn’t change my opinion of him as a fucking batshit crazy moron whose arguments in this thread (and quite a few others) defy all logic and reason.
Mhendo you are right. I retract my post above yours. I don’t know what I was thinking. That said…Fuck you Martin Hyde.
Maybe you didn’t face war; maybe you’ve never had anything tragic happen to you; maybe you’re made of sterner stuff than your average person and cope just fine w/o professional assistance.
But I know a lot of my troops looked forward more to Chaplain Brown’s visits (even the ones who didn’t profess religion) than they did the chow truck or the Roaming Butchers (mobile dentist truck).
The Army promises to take care of your material needs in order to make you get up and fight; soldiers take it or granted that food will come (even if it’s just MREs), and if they’re wounded or sick, that they will be tended to by professionals.
Is it any less reasonable then that they would also provide for your emotional needs? Religion goes a long way towards that, and those that dispense religious ministrations are often trained and adept at helping others sort through their emotions and come to grips with their situation.
And because some fucktard will say it, I’ll go ahead and belabor the “so-fucking-obvious-it-needn’t-be-said-but-I-will-anyfuckingway-because-some-
asshole-will-pipe-up-and-say-that-‘chaplains-are-incapable-of-dispensing-emotional-counseling-without-appropriate-medical-training’-except-that-
chaplains-are-quite-often-the-first-step-in-the-treatment-chain-and-besides-very-few-soldiers-are-allowed-into-the-military-with-debilitating-emotional-
problems-or-are-allowed-to-stay-in-the-military-once-diagnosed-with-emotional-problems-that-the-military-didn’t-catch-in-the-pre-enlistment-
physical/screening.”
Because an emotionally crippled soldier who can’t or won’t fight is nothing more than a well fed basket case with straight teeth. Hell, there’s plenty of them on every street in America, but that does little good at the sharp end where you need a shooter behind the trigger.
You may be a “fucking idiot”, like the thread title says, but at least you can do that.
I heard him too! He apologized! Takes a big man to admit that he’s a fucking idiot and apolgize. Perhaps your Mr. Hyde persona is finally beginning to recede, Dr. Jerkyll.
I read Martin’s brief description of his life at West Point. I choked on the first sentence:
Right.
What on earth is that?
Rear-echelon mother fucker. A bureaucrat in a uniform, as opposed to a “real” (fighting) soldier.
rear echelon mother fucker
Martin Hyde, question: If a soldier visits the chaplain for emotional support, does that make him a cancer on the face of society? Enquiring minds want to know.
This is one of the funniest posts I’ve ever read.
