As the title says, another odd comics question that I’ve been mildly curious about.
“Unaided” meaning “using their own demonstrated powers/abilities, or whatever gadgets they would normally have at their disposal or on their person,” but not using actual spacecraft.
Characters who can teleport the distance also count. So would jumping really high, technically, I guess.
Marvel “2099,” Ultimate universe, etc. count, if noted.
While DC examples are easy enough to come by, I’m having more difficulty with Marvel’s. The only one off the top of my head that I’m certain of would be Silver Surfer—assuming you don’t count his board as a “spacecraft.” (I’m…barely willing to give it a pass. Maybe it’s the small size and lack of any seats.)
So…'anyone have any suggestions, and a minute to kill?
Now, you said “fly,” but I interpret that as “reach the moon.” I guess any character that can fly could fly to the moon, if they could survive space travel (exit/re-entry), which you didn’t list as a criterion. They could always wear protective gear, but that may violate your “unaided” edict.
My initial thoughts:
Mister fantastic could presumably reach to the moon and pull himself there. But he starts feeling pain after stretching 1500 ft (presumably he can stretch farther). Not sure he could survive in space.
Magneto could possibly pull himself to the moon (not sure how distant the influence of his magnetism is, or if the metals on the moon are abundant enough to allow him to do so).
Iron Man, of course. Also, various characters who are derived from him, like War Machine.
Hulk’s gotten a lot more powerful since the page posted, and could almost certainly jump all the way.
Since Nightcrawler’s almost certainly been there (the X-Men have had dealings with the Inhumans, and I’m fairly confident that has included visiting the Blue Area), he could teleport there without issue.
Lockjaw!
Celestials
Nova (Or any Nova Corps Centurion, I guess)
Probably some individual Eternals (but definitely the Uni-Mind)
Some members of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, like Gladiator and Starbolt
In the first Brood story I read (this would have been in the early 90s, but it might have been in an issue of Classic X-Men), Kurt teleported from space to Earth (or maybe the other way around…I just remember it was a long jump), and his only issue was not really knowing his intended landing area.
I can’t say about Captain Marvel or Captain Marvel. But I recall an issue of Avengers when Captain Marvel (the Carol Danvers version) was using the name Warbird. She tried to fly to the moon but passed out in the attempt. Of course, that was several writers and a few names ago, and I haven’t kept up with comics in a long while. She may have better powers now.
In the movies, at least, War Machine definitely can’t. He’s wearing the Mk. 2 suit, the one that iced up when it went too high (before Stark fixed that problem by going to the gold-titanium alloy).
For Stark himself, it probably depends on the suit’s life support capabilities. The power supply and propulsion would definitely suffice, and he’s got to have at least limited air capabilities, but has he ever been shown to stay in the suit for days at a time?
In the story in question, she was quite drunk. Off the sauce, she can make the flight easily.
I was surprised and a little disappointed to see those SHIELD flying cars make the trip to the moon, but you did say “unaided.”
The Avengers (which space out over about six books at the moment) have several members who could make the trip, including StarBrand, Ex-Nihilo, Manifold (another teleporter), Smasher, and Pod, whose precise abilities elude me but seems to be a new incarnation of Super-Adaptoid. Captain Britain’s abilities depend entirely on who is writing him. He’s supposed to be barely-functional outside of Great Britain, but they make a lot of exceptions. A lot of these are unlikely to survive the current storyline.
Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, as been shown to be able to fly to Jupiter, but I doubt that story is in continuity. Johnny Storm has also flown unaided in space on numerous occasions (original Galactus trilogy and Steve Englehart’s tenure on FF), but I think those involved special flying rigs and a temporary power bump; normally, I doubt he could do it.
