Marvel fans...break down Guardians of the Galaxy for me

Wait… Groot, as in *this *Groot?

Yes.

Which means Fin Fang Foom film cannot be far behind.

He was a bit more verbose back in the day.

I’d expect any film with Drax, Gamora, and Nebula to pull in at least a bit of dark and gritty. Their paths are not bright and smooth.

I think Drax’s skin looks fake.

Who the hell is that guy in the corner and why does he give such an oddly specific time for destroying Groot?

For anyone like me who still doesn’t know exactly what all this Guardians stuff is all about, I found this YouTube video that sort of explains what some of the folks in this thread have tried to go over. I’m kind of seeing how this fits in thanks to some of the good explanations above as well as this video, and have to admit while I was going to give this movie a pass based on the trailer I think now I’m interested in seeing it and seeing how it plays out.

He’s just like…a dude that has somewhere to be at midnight. He’s got shit to do!

He forgot to feed his Gremlin and he’s got to get back home.

According to the link that Kamino Neko helpfully provided, he’s scientist Leslie Evans, who “unleashed… a specially bred colony of termites. The insects voraciously ate through Groot’s hide, and into his core.” Why he specified midnight, I don’t know. Maybe that’s the termites’ bedtime.

The same reason Spock would say "There’s an 83 point 45 chance that . . . " It sounds cool and in charge and who’s going to argue with it? No one else wants to do the math.

If Groot, for example, argued, he would say that he couldn’t be destroyed at all.* He won’t stop to quibble. He’d never say “No, I will survive until at least 2:45, puny human!”

  • If he was a doper, he might sneer that Leslie obviously doesn’t know what ‘invincible’ means.

Dave Cockrum had wanted to do a Legions spinoff series featuring several of his own characters. One of the reasons he left DC was because they rejected his proposal and a few other ideas he had for the Legion. Nightcrawler made the transition to the X-Men as is, while Storm was a composite of several characters. Of course, the Legion versions were both aliens instead of mutants.

The reason Wolverine became one of the new X-Men was because writer Len Wein had created him when he was writing Incredible Hulk and wanted to bring him over when he left that title to do X-Men.

Oddly enough, he actually is. Del Toro is playing Taneleer Tivan, The Collector. In the comics he’s a seemingly immortal being who gathers powerful objects as insurance against future calamity, not sure what his role in the movie universe will be.

But, he appeared in the stinger scene after Thor: The Dark World, where Volstagg and Sif deliver the Aether to him for safekeeping, and he shows up for a flash in at least one of the *Guardians *trailers and is listed in the cast on IMDB.

Drax and Gamora both look terrible.

Drax in a way that I can’t tell if he’s terrible practical makeup or terrible CGI. Gamora is definitely the former.
