I read that Clark Gregg has been in talks to maybe appear in some flashbacks, which seems like a pretty good compromise to me. Those folks who simply have to have themselves some more Coulson will get themselves some more Coulson, and the rest of us won’t have to put up with the show hopping around from LMDs to holograms to time travel to whatever this week’s phlebotinum is, twisting itself into knots trying to keep the character around instead of letting him go in a dignified fashion. Coulson has already managed to cheat death once, and I think that was enough.
