Marvel's Next Big Movie: Dr. Strange?

Linkety link.
They’ve been dropping hints in the other movies, and now it looks like they want to go ahead with it. In my opinion, this will either be an over-the-top masterpiece, or an over-the-top fiasco, depending on who they chose to play the roles. My choices?
Dr. Stephen Strange-Eric Dane
Wong-B.D. Wong

Eye of Agamotto-One of Marty Feldman’s since he’s not using them any more.

Did it, 1978.

Not a big screen movie.

Doctor Strange was one of my more favorite comics back in the day, which suggests that I’d enjoy a movie (if it were well-done), but I’d always thought that Strange was one of Marvel’s more niche-y characters. OTOH, with the success of modern-day wizard fiction like Harry Potter and Dresden Files, maybe it’d have an audience.

Go big or go home.

Dr. Strange and Wong. And Baron Mordo.

And let’s not forget the dread Dormammu.

And Clea! Don’t forget her. Dunno who I would cast as her. Would it be too out there to get Lady Gaga to do the other-dimensional babe’s part?

I’ve always wanted to see an animated version of Dr. Strange, done in the classic Steve Ditko style. On the other hand, I certainly wouldn’t want to see a lot of Ayn Rand / objectivist “philosophizing” in the flick.
Perhaps a “Dr. Strange” flick could be used to kick off another “Avengers” type franchise. One flick about Strange, another about Namor the Sub-Mariner, a third about the Valkyrie, and finally a fourth film entitled “the Defenders” combining all three of them and the Hulk.

I just want the CGI or whatever to try to reproduce the feel of Ditko’s acid-trippy drawings (from the 1960s comic) as nearly as possible.

There was an animated Doctor Strange movie which I quite enjoyed, but it certainly didn’t feel much like a Marvel movie. I have no idea what the Steve Ditko style is, though.

I always wanted them to do a Dr. Strange movie.

Unfortunately, the actor I always wanted to play him is likely to be considered too old now,

Tom Skerritt

Lately I think Wayne Coyne is how I picture a live action Dr. Strange to look.

I’m looking forward to this. I always thought Strange would make a great movie. The FX these days could manage this with half the budget it took to do the last Harry Potter. I’m crossing my fingers.

Now if Hollywood finally discovers Grimjack my inner-child will squeel with delight.

How about Hugh Laurie?

My ghod, you’re right-he’d make a great Wong!

Jeffrey Combs.

Then they could do a Namor movie, and follow up with The Defenders!

No mention of the Silver Surfer? Was he retconned out of the Defenders or something?

A Silver Surfer movie would be pretty cool (as long as it completely ignored FF2). Marvel should consider exploring more of its cosmic characters. Space + Superheros? What could possibly go wrong? Well, Green Lantern, obviously, but still…

Trippy.

Honestly, I think Marvel is sort of scraping the bottom of its superhero barrel at this point. I can’t believe there would be a market for a Dr. Strange movie.

I would agree, but Marvel has just managed to put together two very respectable summer movies using two characters that could have been incredibly cheesey. They really seem to be able to play to the strengths of each character, and if they can continue in this vein, then I’m more than happy for them to carry on

I’m sure as long as these movies keep making money, they’ll keep rummaging through their old funny books.

Frankly, I was amazed that they were able to turn Iron Man and Thor into successful movies, so I guess a good Dr. Strange movie is not outside the (mystic) realm of possibility.

Are you kidding? Right on the coattails of an incredibly successful 8-movie series about wizards and magic? If any time is right for Dr. Strange, it’s now.

If they do it right, though. They’d have to make him cool. I agree with an earlier poster that it’s too bad that Robert Downey Jr. already has a superhero to play. He would have been perfect.

Hugh Laurie would be great too–but I suspect they’ll get somebody younger. I just hope they don’t pick a pretty boy over somebody with some intensity. Doc needs to be intense. And intelligent.
