ETA: An entire visual list of “alternate” MTM signoff graphics. I’d forgotten Saint Elsewhere’s “kitten in scrubs”.
Change of Habit? Because I remember wondering when Laura became a nun and was glad she ditched God for Elvis. At least, that’s how I remembered it.
ETA: i was about 7 when I saw it on TV and a hopeless romantic. And a Catholic, so go figure!
And a flatline for the final episode.
I read that comic avidly when I was a kid. Thanks, terentii, I’m off to Ebay.
I’ve had a crush on her since the first time I saw her on one the old shows–I don’t even remember which one it was.
Dick van Dyke will take it hard. They’ve been friends for over 50 years.
How many know that she had a brief career as a record album model?

I had a crush on her.
I was 4 or 5, but I thought she was wonderful.
Never entirely put it aside.
Goodnight, Laura.
“Talk to you later, Sam.”
“Sure, Mister D.”
Gordy Howard is 77 years old (never realized his name was that close to hockey legend Gordie Howe)
Mary Richards mother is still living, Nanette Fabray.
Hope all the remaining MTM cast members have a group hug and shuffle to the Kleenex Box.
RIP Mary.
Mary you gifted my life with much laughter. Thank you. RIP.
I just remembered that Jerry Paris, Mary’s co-star on Dick van Dyke, was also a member of the Steve Canyon cast.
Holy crap! It’s a virtual catalogue of period TV actors!
Here we go. Lety at our local PBS station sent the link. This is the special they ran a few years ago.
I’ll always remember her most fondly as Laura Petrie in the Dick Van Dyke Show. RIP Mary.
I propose we all watch **this **tonight in memoriam:
*A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants!* :oI see a lot of them on Richard Diamond many are just starting out. Joey Bishop had a bit part as a criminal informer. Deforest Kelley played a guy who’s Wife cheated him in a life insurance scam. When Diamond finds his body, I didn’t think to say, “He’s dead, Dick!”
I loved both of her major sitcoms, DVD and MTM. I used to have every episode on VHS, taped from Nick at Nite.
This is a sad day for me.
I’m usually not emotional about eleb deaths, so Ii surprised myself with a good long cry when I heard.
Most of the cast from MTM are getting super elderly – I think Betty White might actually be immortal.
“You can’t be brave if you’ve only had wonderful things happen to you.” - MTM
It’s sad that she’s gone.
She always seemed to be the adorable, lovable, eternally youthful woman.
R.I.P. Mary
First, I will say her performance as Ice Queen Beth in Ordinary People was superb. That movie hinges on her character. Unloving without being abusive. That was perfect.
But of the roles that made her famous? I’m sorry, they irritated me. Not her fault, she did them well. But that type of woman portrayed just sets my jaw to snarling.
I’ve been aware she has been rather ill for a while but this is still very sad. Mary Richards is the character most folks remember but for me she will always be the lovely Laura Petrie.
RIP
To those of you who, in another thread, wondered why people cry from celebrity deaths… Do you understand now?
