Ooops, slipped my mind. I completely forgot about 'em – we don’t celebrate Memorial Day, National Day (Fourth of July), Labor Day, Columbus Day nor Thanksgiving here in Sweden.
Still, you’d think I’d’ve remembered New Year’s Day.
Hmm. My last post was a little unclear – when I said that we don’t celebrate the fourth of July, I MEANT that we don’t celebrate the Swedish national day, the sixth of June.

** I live in the same county as Kensington, MD (it’s actually two minutes from my old apartment), it’s called Montgomery County, not “Maryland County.” Yes, the same county that almost fined smokers whose smoke disturbed their neighbours. Yes, the same liberal county that continuously elects a Republican to Congress. Am I not invited to NYC? I’d love to take my wife there to visit, it’s been a dream of her’s for a long time. But, I guess I’m not welcome.Cartooniverse, I’m currently compiling the Yes stuff you’ve e-mailed me about. Heaven forbid I think about personally delivering it, just because I’m from “Maryland County.”**
HARDLY
First of all, there’s politics and then there’s “YES”. Priorities man, priorities. Second of all, I grew up in Montgomery County ( PA ). I know the difference. Third of all, I’d like to perhaps alter my rant to focus in on the dickweeds who have tried to take your county over. They can sit in their fiefedom and stew in their own juices.
You wanna bring the wife to Enwye? Broadway tickets are half price and hotel rooms are going begging. I apologize, I did paint with too broad a brush.
However, I stand by the tone of my hijack. Mail Carriers? Huh? Have you considered perhaps a move to…Delware County, PA?
Santa Allowed Back For Tree-Lighting Ceremony (WJLA)
Town is aswarm with Santas (Baltimore Sun)
Santa Has the Last Ho, Ho, Ho (Washington Post)

I think the most ridiculous part of the story is that one of the people who complained about Santa doesn’t appear to have a problem with government-sponsored religious displays. She’s been fighting to get a mennorah added to the Christmans tree display for several years.
Former Kensington town councilman Jon Gerson’s letter in the Washington Post this morning (the link has several letters; his is the last one) has some further details:
No family in Kensington ever asked for Saint Nicholas to be banned from the town’s annual tree-lighting. Rather than the exclusion of anything, what some local families did request was the inclusion of a Hanukkah menorah. The mayor refused, then publicly blamed “two Jewish families” for spoiling the celebration.
To flame passions more, the mayor later read into the town meeting record a letter from a nonresident that derided the Jewish families as “nitpicking instigators.” Including a menorah, added a council member in a similar spirit, would “open the floodgates to voodoos, Rastafarians or jihads.”
Seems there might be more to this than meets Elliott in the Morning’s eye.
