So, you’re listening to one song on the radio and you suddenly think “Oh, wow, that song would sound so good blended in with this other song I like!”
Here’s an fun example…Blondie (Rapture) plus The Doors (Riders on the Storm).
I’d love to hear your unique musical connections you’d like to hear mashed-up, or even great examples already done.
I’ll tell you what prompted this query, although it’s a little embarrassing. I’ve thought of this one a few times before, but only dug deeper tonight as Mr. Elemenopy and I were going down the rabbit hole of favorite songs on Youtube. I’ve always thought the Beatles “Don’t Let me Down” and Roxy Music’s “Jealous Guy” would make a fabulous mashup/medley, and one I wanted to noodle on myself on the piano. Welp, turns out *both *songs were written by John Lennon (around the same timeframe, too) …so I guess I should be pleased that I have a good ear, but know I’m a bit thick about composers of that era. :o Also turns out, some French chick had the same ideaabout melding the songs back in the day, but didn’t do too well IMO.
Anyway, I’d love to hear some other examples, whether it’s an imaginary mix you’d like to hear, or even something already executed in a clever way.
I have a friend who’s a natural at this and plays many weird mashups like Black Sabbath - War Pigs/Top of the World - Carpenters.
My favourite that we do together is Take Five/These Eyes/Love is Blue then switching to American Woman/In My Life. Stretching 4/4 songs into 5/4 time works better than you’d think.
A strange doper connection happened when I was talking to some mutual friends about singing the lyrics of one song to the tune of another. One of them was googling on her phone looking for ideas and mentioned singing the Star Spangled Banner to the tune of the Soviet National Anthem. I immediately jumped up and sang it.
Ooh, do you have these uploaded anywhere? Sounds like fun!
Showing my nerd panties here, but if anyone’s ever played the DJ Hero series on PS3 a few years ago, they had a ton of fun mixes. Unfortunately, I never got very good at the game.
Weird Al has been known to do it. Usually in the sense of “lyrics from one song, music from another.” Here is Money For Nothing mashed up with the Beverly Hillbillies theme:
And here is *The Brady Bunch* mashed up with *The Safety Dance:
