Mask Compliancy: How's your location doing?

So, in Ottawa it became mandatory to wear a face mask in all public places a week ago. A week prior to that it was mandatory to wear a mask on public transportation.

I must say, the compliancy rate from my observation level is almost 100%. It’s definitely over 95%anywY

Ten days ago our city has instituted an emergency mask ordinance for 61 days. Masks must be worn in all retail and dining establishments, though there’s an awfully long exception list.

I see much more compliance than before, and I also see that the grocery and pet store are a good deal less crowded. Those are the only places I go, really, except for work. Interestingly, I work in non-essential retail and our sales are beating last year’s despite being open fewer hours, working with fewer staff, and having a good deal less product choice/availability on the shelves.

Our company has been very firm on the “must be masked or use curbside service” policy since the beginning of this crisis, which is great. They stand behind us as employees 100% to interact only so far as our personal comfort levels allow, and for the most part our customers are grateful for all the efforts we have gone through to stay open and to be safe.

I pissed off a customer yesterday though. I had talked to her on the phone earlier in the day and described the varieties of the item she was looking for, the difference in prices, etc. When she came in to get them she was masked, but as she started to talk she was pulling the mask away from her face. I cheerfully told her I could hear her very well and she could leave the mask on. She said something to the effect of ‘Oh no, it’s not that, I just can’t … I’m not used to these things like you people are.’ As she was speaking she stepped closer to me, stepping well inside my 6 ft bubble, so I stepped back. Unfortunately there was a large floor mirror behind me and I bumped it, and stumbled a bit to grab it thinking I might have hit it hard enough to tip it over. Lady got ALL offended and insisted she didn’t need my help (I pointed out to her anyway where the items were and stayed pleasant and polite) and then later she made a snarky comment to my coworker about people tripping over themselves to get away. I did notice, though, that leaving the mask on her face seemed to not be an issue anymore!

Yeah, sorry-not-sorry lady. You’ve just admitted you haven’t been wearing a mask, AND you said you’ve just moved here from a long way away. You are definitely not getting near enough to breathe on me.

I live on the boundary of two counties. One is driven by tourism and is really very liberal. They are doing great. The other county is a ranching community and quite conservative, they are kind of mixed. One grocery store is following safe protocol, but a lot of other places aren’t. This is in the mountains of Colorado

UK here. Masks have been required on public transport for quite a while now. In England masks are required in shops starting today. Compliance on transport has been pretty good. A friend of mine is a grocery store manager, I’ll ask him how it’s been when I see him at the pub.

Also UK - mask compliance on public transport in my area has been virtually non-existent if the constant complaining on farcebook is to be believed. I’ve not been anywhere on public transport so can’t comment. I’ve seen quite a few people wearing them in the supermarket over the last few weeks, so am hoping from now on it will be better.

I’m going into town tomorrow so it’ll be interesting to see how many people are wandering around with masks under their chins until they have to cover up to go inside a shop. And of course we don’t have to wear them in pubs and restaurants so that’s going to confuse people even more.

Here in southern Merrylande, compliance seems to be pretty good, altho I see far too many people with their noses sticking out. Still, I feel safe going where I need to go.

What I found interesting - my daughter and SIL have been house shopping, and they’ve asked us to go along to get our opinions and such. Anyway, the law here is only 2 people going thru a house at a time, and they must be masked. So when 4 of us are looking at a house, we take turns. PS - they’ve found a house and they’re writing a contract today, so with luck, no more shopping.

The Governor of Indiana announced this week that we’d have a statewide mask mandate. Yesterday the Sheriff of Hamilton County (white suburb of Indianapolis) said that he would not be enforcing the mandate, declaring it unconstitutional. Then a state rep posted a picture of a gun, ammo clip and his beat up copy of the US Constitution with the caption “Starting Monday, the governor wants to lock me in a cage for 180 days and fine me $1,000 if I don’t wear a mask that has no published standards for effectiveness. What if I don’t comply, Governor Eric Holcomb?”.

So yeah, we have a bunch of childish morons around here.

I live in Massachusetts. I think we’ve done pretty well with mask compliance. Our numbers have been pretty good, though I think we’re seeing some “upswing” lately, like most other states.

I’m a big fan of our Governor, Charlie Baker. He’s a moderate Republican serving a traditionally Democratic state. IMHO, he’s provided great leadership and independent thinking through this whole thing. The Politics of Masks isn’t as bad here as some places, especially up in my little seaside village, but we do see people out and about without masks pretty much everywhere we go.

Chicago here. It’s been 100% inside stores, gas stations, and the like (indoor spaces) for a couple months. (I can only remember one person in the past two months not wearing a mask inside a store.) In terms of wearing them correctly (i.e., over the nose, mouth, and chin) It’s something around 85%, I’d guess.

We drove from Chicago to Binghamton, NY, last week and it was interesting seeing how different the attitudes were through the states. Indiana was pretty lax – less than 50%, but they don’t have a mandate. Ohio was pretty good, but there were still a percentage (10-15%) of people at a Wal-Mart outside Toledo that were not wearing masks. The farther east you got, it seemed like mask discipline got better. New York was 100% as well.

I’d guess overall mask compliance around here is 75%. I stopped at a store I have never been in and was surprised there was no “MASKS REQUIRED” sign on the door like everywhere else has. I opened the door and the first two people I saw were not wearing masks. I turned around and left.

I’m in Manhattan. Masks have been required inside all stores and on public transportation for months. Inside, I’d say compliance is close to 100%. I do see a fair amount of people walking outside on the street wearing them incorrectly or not at all, so I always give them a wide berth when passing.

In Upstate NY. Compliance is quite good. I rarely see people without masks when shopping (some don’t cover their noses) and compliance has seemed to be even better the last week or so.

Some people take them off outdoors. That’s not ideal, but it’s easier to keep away from them.

I live in ultra-liberal brownstone Brooklyn, New York.

I’d estimate that mask compliance in general is around 80-85%. It should be better.

Mask-wearing among runners, all over the place here, on our very narrow sidewalks, is at best around 50%. Some weeks ago, when I actually kept track of every runner I saw for a week, it was slightly less than 50%.

It looks like about 100% here in Napa Valley, but I see a lot of noses hanging out. I wish I had the moxie to tell them they’re doing it wrong.

Here on Long Island just outside of NYC: most people wear masks whenever indoors and/or approaching somebody even outdoors to get close enough to ask a question. A minority wear masks all the time even in their cars alone or while jogging. A small minority of business-people and customers do that annoying thing where they have a mask and it’s technically on them but either it’s pulled completely down around their throats or it’s over their mouth but not their nose.

Arizona here. What’s a face mask? Are you guys talking about those odd looking things people hang off of an ear? I see those once in a while.

Here in Austin most people are complying indoors. Most people aren’t wearing masks outdoors, but it’s hard to catch the virus in an outdoors environment anyway.

We’ve gone from about 80% to near 100% compliance inside retail stores in past two weeks. [Kitsap County, WA]

Our Mayor issued an order, with too many exemptions & loopholes.
Still, around 80% of the folks are masked.

Here in the Idaho portion of the Treasure Valley, it’s all over the place. Walmart is much emptier lately since they made the corporate decision to make it mandatory. The local grocer has finally made it mandatory but enforcement, eh, the employees at this store have been 100% wearing masks since march, the customers not so much. One local convenience store chain went corporate policy a few weeks ago when Boise instituted a local mandate but compliance, while gradually getting better there is still not 100%. This place will never be there and Boise is probably one of possibly two or three towns that might come close (meaning reaching or exceeding 50%ish compliance/enforcement)
