Masks for markers?

I’ve decided to try my hand at creating some pseudo folk art with markers. But it turns out that the ones I purchased use ink similar to that in white board markers. In other words it gets you sort of dizzy on exposure (although, since they are smaller than whiteboard markers it is not as bad, per minute of exposure.)

Since I could potentially draw for hours and hours with markers, should I wear a mask like other visual artists sometimes do? If so, what specs, tolerances, or keywords should I look for?

Consult with a physician before using masks. Seriously.

You’ll need an cartridge mask, something likethis using organic vapor cartidges, like these. Don’t waste your or your physician’s time asking.

Thanks for getting me started, Bill, that looks like exactly what I need to protect me from some of the stuff in markers. At least if Wiki is to be believed, since you wear those masks to protect from “volatile organic compounds”, and those markers contain the same type of volatile organic compounds found in spraypaint (users of which use those masks), and Sharpies are permanent markers.

Permanent health effects aside, I’m wondering if such a mask would also protect me from getting woozy from the solvents released from markers. Wiki is a bit sketchy in that regard. I could always read labels when I go to the hardware store but at least now I know the terminology I need to use.
