Mass Effect Legendary - my thoughts while I play these games (spoilers as I play)

There’s a certain alien whom only BroShep can romance, whom I enjoy putting the moves on.

I was thinking the same. Every time I think it will be someone else on a new playthrough it always ends up being that one.

I hate that it is a Renegade choice. I think I read somewhere that they have reworked some of these choices so, maybe, we can get away with it now when running Paragon.

Well, I have an extended break that I scheduled for this afternoon.

I secretly hoped Origin would let me launch the game this morning, but alas, it still says “no”.

I am going to launch it at 11:05 AM Eastern and let me tell you, if it doesn’t get unlocked pretty quick, I’ll lose some patience here.

This is my first pre-order in my entire life(I’m 42). I did pick up Wind Waker at midnight for a friend who was out of the country and he let me play it before he got back(he was gone two weeks) so Wind Waker on Gamecube is the last game I played on the day of release, I believe. Of course…that ran off the disk and had no “lock” on it.

FYI there is a reported Day-1 patch that is 11.8GB.

So. You will likely need to download the rest of the game that didn’t come in the pre-load download and then you will have to download that Day-1 patch. So, depending on your internet, that may take some time.

Yes, if it downloads that, though, I’ll take that as a good indicator that their “timed unlocking” has worked.

In my experience the timed release things happen when they say. The only caveat is the company may get slammed as everyone piles on at once making it seem like it is not working.

The first ME game I played was ME2, and as it happens, it’s the only one I really liked. ME1 was too clunky for me and ME3 was just a disappointment story-wise. I kind of wish I played them in order, but I also wonder if I would have gotten ME2 if I had.

I agree ME2 was the best but I think ME3 was mostly really good.

ME1 was the clunkiest of the lot but most things I have read says this Legendary Edition has the biggest impact on ME1 so…will it be enough? I dunno. The story will be the same as will the characters.

I will say one thing I liked about ME1 that the other games sort of did less with was interacting with various aliens around the citadel. We should have had a LOT more interactions with the Elcor and the Hanar (that I can remember).

But to each their own. Not every game suits everyone.

They’re all different and they all have their strengths. I sometimes say, if I had a game with the storytelling sophistication of the first ME, the depth of character of the second, and the polished mechanics of the third, I would possibly play nothing else, ever.

It will help while playing ME1 that I will keep in mind that some things smoothed out more in the sequels. I keep reading that everywhere.

Yep. And a few things, some people say, were over smoothed. (“Inventory is unwieldy? Let’s get rid of it entirely!”) That’s why it’s so difficult to say any one game is full-stop better than the others, it’s totally YMMV depending on what you enjoy. But they all fit together, more or less, and the trilogy as a whole is essential. It’s just uneven in the details.

I really think the Mass Effect series is best enjoyed as an interactive story. The pew pew stuff is secondary. That stuff matters and is fun but if you approach it thinking you are getting a solid FPS it’s not there. It was never meant to be that. But it has a great story and fantastic characters. I am hard pressed to think of a PC game whose characters I cared about more. There were moments that brought a tear to my eye and I was really bummed (not kidding…willing to bet most here who have played it can guess at at least one moment). That is a rare and special thing in a game.

I agree with all of this with great enthusiasm.

Though occasionally the pew-pew is wonderful fun and shouldn’t be sold short.

Agreed. That’s why I always feel a bit uneasy when people say ME2 is “the best” rather than “my favourite”.

Personally, I think there are a number of things in ME2 that were a step backwards in terms of story and gameplay (from my point of view).

We’re at 36 posts here and I haven’t even started the game.

Agree. And other things were a big step forward.

It’s all nuanced.

I’m waiting for the postman to put the disc in my hand. I’m a little anxious.

FWIW I bought from Origin and just loaded the game. No downloads at all…just fired right up.

YMMV

I’m in game already. No big patch yet. I’m OK with that.
