Mass Effect Legendary - my thoughts while I play these games (spoilers as I play)

I am on lunch and tried to play. I has a required 17GB update. Yeesh.

You guys might like this article from the Onion.

No joking, Warioland 2 is an amazing game, though. So is Warioland 3.

I’m getting the update but mine says 9GB.

That said I am averaging a download speed of 3 MB/sec. Usually I do 30 MB/sec.

This will take a while.

Yes, it ended up being smaller, but took my entire lunch break. I would prefer to have been able to play. I’m only on ME1, but game has worked fine for me.

I don’t think the Xbox elevator rides were any longer than the loading screens from Red Dead Redemption 2 (say), and at least they had some conversation and news reports to liven them up. I think the only aggravating part would be if you rode elevators twice in rapid succession, for instance.

Which you had to do all too frequently, as I recall.

So, surveying planets. This is important? Specifically in ME1.

Hey, thanks for recommending reading the Codex. It has helped flesh out some of the backstory and reiterate points I had not caught on.

There are some callbacks to various minor objectives in subsequent games, including a hilarious moment in ME3 which you’ll only get if you’ve been pretty fanatically completionist. But in terms of major plot and character development stuff, you can mostly skip surveying. Surveying in ME2 plays a rather different role, where you’ll want to do it, but you won’t want to do it any more than necessary.

I haven’t had a huge need to buy things, either. The loot I get out of containers and so forth is equal to better than anything I find for sale. I have been converting my low level gear to Omnigel, though I have not had to use it much since my allies and I can hack through locks pretty well.

The only things I remember buying in ME 1 are the high-quality weapons from the Spectre store in C-SEC headquarters (the top items are fairly expensive) or maybe one of the auto-healing armor mods early on.

Aside from a “trace the signal” side quest, I can’t remember too many situations that required you to avoid using the Citadel rapid transit

So what you’re saying is that it was my own fault I was riding the elevators? :stuck_out_tongue:

This is true for weapons, armor, and the mods for both. The exception, in my experience over many playthroughs, is top-of-the-line biotic amps and omni-tools. You’ll get a shitload of worthless Logic Arrests out of the loot crates, but the Savants, while rare, are somewhat more likely to appear in merchant stocks.

Just picked this up today. I played all 3 on 360 and loved them. Forgot almost all of the story so I’m mostly starting from scratch. I’m only a couple hours in to ME1 but wanted to share a couple impressions.

  1. I forgot how awesome the score for this game was. It’s up there with Halo in terms of perfection.

  2. I did not forget that Garrus and Wrex are 2 of the greatest video game characters of the voice acted era. Excellently scripted and acted. The only video game character that beats them in acting is John Marston.

  3. Male Shep voice acting is wooden as hell and he has zero personality in ME1. Can’t remember if it gets better in the sequels. Never played Fem Shep. Is she better?

  4. QoL improvements are solid. The only thing they REALLY blew it on was not fixing the buttons for dialog selection. The same button that chooses dialog is also the one that skips to the next line. So if I’m reading fast and blazing thru I constantly accidentally make a selection without reading. Why they didn’t fix this I have no idea.

  5. This is one of the only games where I feel compelled to read all of the codex entries because they really flesh out the universe and The voice actor reading the codex entry sounds great, no complaints there, but man I wish they would have given the option to disable the narrating of every entry. I would rather read them and there is no way to do that without the audio playing.

  6. Am I crazy or is there no way, at least in ME1, to view the controls in the options? I cannot find anywhere to review what button does what. It’s gotta be here somewhere. Isn’t it?

All in all I can tell this is going to be a good value for $60. The story telling is superb and it’s one of only a handful of games where I feel personal attachment to more than just the main character.

For the most part, the only things you’ll want to buy are bio amps, omnitools, grenade and medkit upgrades, and licenses (which allow the Normandy vendor to stock more high-end stuff) until you unlock the Spectre elite gear, which easily outclasses any other weapon in the game. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for the Frictionless Materials weapon mod later in the game, which makes it possible for your assault rifle to fire pretty much indefinitely without ever overheating.

I’ve only ever played as FemShep, and her VA, Jennifer Hale, is awesome in the part and is pretty much a legend among VAs.

FemShep is worth playing just for the joy of having a certain turian boyfriend starting in ME2, and especially that tango scene with him in ME3: Citadel.

But BroShep is wonderful because Tali is available as a girlfriend starting in ME2, and she’s straight.

Femshep is exactly nine million percent better than Maleshep.

I always romance Liara myself.

They’re also great in that other thing with the spaceships.

I still could use a little more information in certain situations.

I just completed a mission on Luna, our moon. I was actually very happy to visit our cluster and realize they put codex-type information on all the planets.

Anyway, I did the mission, which was to get rid of rogue robots controlled, I guess, by a rogue VI. Basically, sweep in and wipe out everybody and blow up the computer processors. OK, did it.

I was offered a class specialization. Wait, was I told that was coming? That’s…great. I think teasing this information out would definitely motivate people to take the mission. I did it because it sounded neat and took place on Luna. I ended up becoming a Shock Trooper, which changed some of my Spectre powers.

My point is: This seems pretty important and if it was clear upfront, I missed it. I don’t even fully get how I got “upgraded” to a specialization class. How did wiping out VI on Luna grant me a specialization?
