Latest CNN (some repeated): What we know about the attack: At least 49 people have been killed, and 20 seriously injured, after mass shootings at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.
What’s known about the suspects: New Zealand police say they have arrested three men and one woman. One man has already been charged with murder. An account believed to belong to one of the attackers featured a link to an 87-page manifesto filled with anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim ideas.
How the country is responding: New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has described the attack as an “unprecedented act of violence” and called it “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.” Meanwhile, police have mobilized every national police resource to respond to the attack.

My brother and his family live in that area. I heard the first news reports, and it took me two hours to reach him. Those were two of the longest hours in my life. Fortunately, everybody is fine.

According to the report on CBC this morning, one of the places the shooter got the idea from was the shootup of the Quebec City mosque just over a year ago. These things are contagious.
While there are always reports of multiple shooters, there is hardly ever a second gunman. Off the top of my head I can think of the Boston bombing (which didn’t involve any gunmen until much after the fact) and the 2015 Paris attacks.
In almost every case witnesses are seeing police officers at the scene and believe they’re gunmen.
This appears to be yet another case of a 20-something misanthrope who doesn’t understand math* falling down the rabbit hole of 4chan/8chan/Gab/hate sites.
*It’s a common trope among racist shooters to believe that whites are on the verge of elimination in western countries due to immigration.
It’s something I suspected from the beginning. The information coming in did not fit with an attack by multiple people. These nut jobs want the world to know their version of the truth. It didn’t fit that he announced in his manifesto and stream that he was acting alone if he wasn’t.
I’m still not clear about what happened at the second site. And I didn’t see if they announced why the other two people were arrested
The other two people were doubtless arrested because at times like this, the cops are gonna arrest anyone who looks mildly suspicious. You can always let them go later.

I know nothing about the legal system in New Zealand. Do they have a death penalty for certain crimes. Or is life in prison the limit?
The sensei at the dojo i attended is affected by this. His fahter is from New Zealand, is there now in fact., and one of his grandmothers was Maori.

The current timeline is he did the mass shooting that was on FB live, then turned off his camera when he went to the second location and continued.

At this point I am assuming that the others held supported him in some way after he came in from Australia but didn’t participate directly. Apparently the fourth person who was detained was not involved and was held for an unrelated reason.
