Mass shooting outside gay bar in Oslo, Norway the night between 24-25 June

Two people killed, 21 wounded. About 10 of them seriously.

Today’s Pride parade in Oslo was canceled for security concerns, but there was a spontaneous unofficial parade.

The shooting is being investigated as a terrorist attack, but it may be a case of mental illness. What I get from media, is that it seems as if the shooter was targeting the gay bar.

The shooter was apprehended by bystanders, and the police were at the scene some five minutes after the shooting started.

The shooter was armed with a handgun and an automatic (I assume semiautomatic) rifle. Given the rather strict gun control laws in Norway, I’m a bit curious about how the shooter was able to acquire the guns.

It seems as if the guns were unregistered, i.e. illegal. Not very surprising, given how much it takes to buy a handgun legally. Same with semiautos which aren’t either .22LR or obvious hunting rifles

Why does it feel like America’s mass killing habit is spreading like a disease?

I’m so sorry, Norse. That must have been horrific to see on your TV.

The US also has an extremely high rate on serial killers.

I’d be curious to know how regularly foreign TV shows feature serial killers and spree killers. Here, in the US, police shows are amazingly profligate with shows like CSI having to spin off into multiple versions with separate casts and production crews to keep up with demand.

I wouldn’t be terribly surprised that as foreign TV takes its cues for programming and content that we see similar societal issues spread.

In the advertising world, regularity of exposure is more important than that the customer views to the content of the ad favorably. To some people, an anti-smoking ad is a pro-smoking ad.

That made the news in France. Apparently the shooter is a 42 years old Norwegian of Iranian origins with an history of violence and maybe mental illness. He had been interrogated last month on his ties with radical islamism but deemed “non violent”.
