In terms of shooting the most people in one day? Yeah the 911 guys and McVeigh killed a lot of people, but they did it with airplanes and a bomb. But this Norway guy seems to have killed an awful lot of people with nothing but guns. Seems like he may have the title for most people killed by shooting in one day. There may be some guy in a war that might have had more kills in a day during combat, but I can’t think of anyone who killed more in one day outside of war. Can anyone else?
I think you might be right. Looking at Wiki’s list of spree killers, he’s way at the top of the leader board.
On your list, the runner up had to use a grenade. Number three is pretty interesting, hadn’t heard of him before. He has to have the record for killing people in the most different places. Still reading, but it seems amazing nobody stopped him.

Looking down the list in the wikipedia page that SciFiSam linked to, it seems to agree that Anders Behring Breivik is in the number one spot and Woo Bum-kon is now in second. The wikipedia page for Woo Bum-kon also now says that his was the second most deadliest in history (looking in the history of that page it used to say it was the deadliest before the Norway killings).
Yeah, he was the one that came to mind for me when reading the OP, but he killed half as many people as the Norway shooter.
I read from a specialist on the subject that Breivik is actually of Chinese descent, and died his hair blonde. There must be a correlation between being Asian and getting a good score on your killing spree.
Unless he’s disqualified for being an official executioner for the NKVD, I believe that Vasili Blokhin would be the all time leader in this event. Wikipedia credits him with personally shooting 250 a night for 28 nights, for a total of 7,000 during the Katyn Forest massacre.
Wowsers. But although I didn’t specify in the OP, I was actually most interested in “recreational” spree killers. Although I would like to know also about folks that racked up a big number in war. God, what a story!

People need to stop saying or implying this. When there’s a shooting going on and you’re approached by a uniformed police officer, it’s instinctive to think he represents safety, and leave your cover. It was easy to “rack up” so many kills because most of them were fucking kids.
I believe he was referring to Martin Bryant. You know, the link you cut out of the post you quoted.
Forgot to mention this before, but the reason nobody stopped him was because at each place it was really quick:

And it was next to a historical reenactment area, so people didn’t realise what they were hearing and seeing was actually real. Then, when they did realise the magnitude:
Frankly, pissing off Scandinavians seems like a bad idea. If you’re looking for sheer body count, this annoyed Finnish farmer took out a total of 705 people. And they were all armed soldiers. (It did take him more than one day, though).
The attack wasn’t supervised by Guiness, so no official record was set.

Finns aren’t Scandinavians, though.
They are often referred to as such. Nordic would be more accurate, but it is a lesser used word. I’m not even sure what the noun form is.
In the same way, I believe if you want to be really anal, Danes aren’t Scandinavian either, but they are always referred to as such.
