He still has to make the putt.
Game over.
Sergio wins the Masters!!!
Yess! Took a victory lap, that one.
Great finish!
First time in my life I’ve ever said, “Knock it in, Sergio!”
So happy for Sergio.
Time to break out the question:
Who’s the new “best player out there who hasn’t won a major yet”?
Lee Westwood, tho at 44 he’s past his prime now, only one top 10 in a major (tho it was a 2nd) in his last 12 starts…
Hideki Matsuyama is ranked #4 in the world with no major wins.
If you don’t like him, try Justin Thomas (ranked #8) or Rickie Fowler (ranked #9).
Its a little weird but in golf its not official until a scorecard is signed perhaps 3 hours later. In most sports the scoring and results continue to add up you cant go back in time and change a mistake . A tennis mistaken ruling before the TV overrule could not be corrected as games and sets had been finished.
I suppose the players results could be made final after completion of next hole.
Wasn’t there one a while back where they called a penalty the next day, well after the card was signed?
Aren’t the scorecards signed pretty much immediately after the round ends? After all, one of the other players in the group has to attest to the score as well in order for it to be official. The only time they would delay signing is if a course official told the player that they were still looking over a possible penalty, since not only can the penalty be called after the card is signed, but it would result in the player being disqualified for signing a card with a score that was too low.
At least, that was the rule until the start of 2016; now, if a card is signed and then a penalty is applied, the penalty for the now-illegal scorecard is two strokes plus whatever the other penalty was.
NASCAR has a strange rule; if, after the race ends and everybody has gone home, the winner was found to have something illegal in his car, he is still considered the winner, although any benefits in terms of points earned by winning would be removed. (I think Bill France said, “We don’t want the fans to have to find out who ‘really’ won the race by reading it in the next day’s newspaper.”)
I’d say Tiger Woods. Oh, I know he’s technically won a few majors, but as I have been assured many times, he was playing against a bunch of chokers and losers, although the competition was fantastic before and after his prime.
Maybe that’s because most golf also takes place outside the circle of officialdom, with no referees or officials in sight. I don’t understand why anyone, including the player himself, would object to having someone point out something he either didn’t see, or didn’t call on himself because he didn’t know the rules. I can understand him getting upset if it causes him to lose, because he would have used a different strategy if he had known his score was two shots higher or whatever, but I can’t understand him wanting to win without following the rules.
Some people (not necessarily anyone here) act as if the PGA (or USGA or R&A) slaps a penalty on a player any time somebody picks up the phone. But if a viewer calls in a bullshit accusation, it will only take a minute to verify it’s bullshit.
If you’re good enough to play where millions of people are watching, then you’re good enough to win by the rules. If the rules are too extreme (and I think they are, in some cases), change the rules.
Man, it is damn, damn satisfying to see an eternal can’t-catch-a-break bridesmaid sob story finally pull it together and finish the job. Felt that way when the Red Sox won the '04 World Series, felt that way when John Elway got his first Super Bowl ring, definitely feel that way today.
Noticed something funny during the whole ceremony and afterword: not one mention of Tiger Woods. THIS was why Garcia got saddled with the Best Golfer Never To Win a Major albatross for so long. From pretty much day one, he was one of those almost-superstars a la Andy Roddick, Riddick Bowe, or Michelle Kwan. Plenty of ability but either prone to embarrassing errors, inconsistent, or just not the total package, so he needs things to really go his way to win a big event. Had Woods not gotten completely into his head and crushed his ambitions, I’m certain he would’ve notched his major before 2011, possibly as many as three. I realize Woods has been a nonentity for a while, but to mention all the hardships Garcia had to overcome and never mention the primary cause of said hardships seems a bit strange.
And yes, I’m aware that he was something of a jerk. Key word, was. Full credit for growing up and wising up (he was the picture of class during the ceremony), and if it took a lot longer than it should’ve, that still puts him ahead of numerous sports figures who still don’t get it.
Common misconception. Same with Phil, “If he hadn’t played during the Tiger era, he might have won ten majors.” Well, no. Phil and Sergio each lost only one major to Tiger, i.e. Tiger won only one major where they finished solo second.
Sergio finished second to Tiger in the 1999 PGA Championship, when he was 19. At that age, he was thrilled, not crushed, to have done that. I can’t prove you’re wrong about the mere knowledge of Tiger preventing him from winning, but I do know that he never finished second in a major to Tiger after that first one in 1999, and didn’t even contend in most of the others Tiger won.
The guy who lost the most from Tiger being on the Tour was Chris DiMarco. He’s well past his prime now, and was never considered more than a talented journeyman. But he’s the only player who was solo second to Tiger in a major more than once, and one of them was by playoff. He would be a multiple major winner if not for Tiger.
I was fast forwarding thru some of it. What was Sergio doing with the pine needles before his drop that they apparently were taking a second look at? When he was doing that, even my wife (yes, my WIFE enjoys watching golf w/ me!) asked, “Can he do that?”
I’ve heard folk say the superstars - mainly Tiger - was especially at risk of the video rules call ins, because pretty much every stroke of theirs was televised. Kinda put them at higher risk of review…
Oh, and to answer my own question, the deal with Lexi Thompson in the recent major occurred the day after the infraction.
That struck me as total BS. What if it had been called in Monday, after she had taken the trophy home?
Keep on propping up those straw men, Tony. Nice threadshit too…
There are typically officials at every hole. You have been following golf for how long?
One issue is that players whose rounds aren’t be televised may get the benefit of a doubt if their infraction goes unnoticed.
Since before Jack turned pro. How long have YOU followed golf? How many times have you seen play grind to a halt while a player waits for an official to arrive? And that’s on the PGA Tour, the richest tour by far.
Even if there were an official on every hole, which is seldom the case outside of majors, how is he going to see everything a foursome does on a 500-yard hole?
So it’s not a perfect world. But the more likely you are to win, the more likely you’re being televised.
