Masters accounting degree

Does anyone know how much schooling it takes to get a masters degree in accounting?

MPA’s, Masters in Public Accounting, tend to be a 1 to 1 and half year program.

I’m guessing you’re undergraduate is not in accounting? You’ll have some classes you’ll have to take in undergrad accounting prior to starting graduate work.

I appreciate your response but it’s not for me. I’m a terminal dumbass. It’s for one of the cashiers where I work.

Hi!

I already have my bachelor’s degree in a non-accounting/non-business related subject. I took a whole semester off to take a bunch of business and accounting classes. Currently, I meet CA’s req for 20 semester units- accounting study, 10 semester units for Ethics Study, 18/24 credits needed for Business-related subjects, and I need 18 credits more in accounting study. The reason I don’t have as much in accounting is because I have take many of the classes in succession due to pre-reqs to get in.

Anyways, I have been going back on forth on what to do moving forward. It is most important for me to land a good job in a year or so. Right now my plan was to continue taking as many more accounting classes at community colleges or university extension programs and work as a book keeper/accounting clerk and then take my CPA. I have a job lined up. Or, would it be better to just get an MBA or MAAcc and take advantage of their recruiting. I am not sure.

what have you experience to be the best method for someone in my position?

My dad is a CPA and does not have a Masters in Accounting (though he has an incredible amount of education, titles and experience in business valuation.) My little brother, on the other hand, has one. He got his bachelor’s degree in accounting, then spent another year in University to get his Master’s degree. My understanding, if I remember correctly, is that you didn’t used to need to have a Master’s degree to get certified CPA, but it these days it was either helpful or near necessary.

But yeah, one full year for him. Two semesters.

/funny story, my little bro is a CPA but he still has our dad do his taxes. What a chump.

I have a masters in accounting and am a CPA.

The masters in accountancy degree is a response to the 150 credit hour requirement that many states recently added to become a CPA. It is merely a bridge to get from 120ish hours in undergrad degrees and should be at most a 30 hour program. The 150 requirement began in Florida to prevent older, semi-retired CPA’s from northern states from practicing in that state as they migrated for their golden years. Like many bad ideas, bureaucrats in other states adopted it.

Once you are a CPA, a masters in accounting means absolutely nothing except to those outside of the industry. If I could do it again, I would have taken rock climbing, history of surfing and underwater basket weaving to get to 150.

My dad was a CPA and his master’s was an MBA.
