Matt Drudge: What's Up With His Success?

After hearing about Matt Drudge on and off for a couple of years and seeing references to him here, I went to his web site and I’m more than a little perplexed. His site appears to me to be little more than a portal with a bunch of links to various articles, columnists and news sites.

In other words, it appears to be just a bunch of links. Yet he supposedly makes over a million dollars a year from it and people quote him all the time as though he has some sort of inside track on what’s really going on.

Can anyone offer an explanation as to how and why he has been able to acheive this kind of success with his site, given that he’s virtually nowhere to be found on it?

Thanks.

His portal is more popular than you imagine. I use it a launchpad for many newspapers and magazines just because I’m used it. Occasionally he gets news ahead of the cruve by not caring whether it’s even minimally confirmed or not , but this sloppiness catches up to him, and lately he’s been chasing and "breaking " a lot of stories that shortly turn out to be mis-informed BS.

  1. It is a convenient collection of news in a nice and simple format. The minimalist approach works damned well, IMO.

  2. He puts up some funny pictures. Not a reason to go there, but a nice bonus every now and again.

  3. Cool siren pictures when there is breaking news.

Drudge isn’t for in-depth analysis or anything like that, but it is a great (and fast) site to hit just to see what the breaking news is.

Largely, he has been coasting on his laurels of being a driving force of the Monica Lewinsky story.
