Matt Smith leaving Doctor Who

I’ve really not enjoyed Smith’s tenure. How much of that is down to Moffat, I’m not sure. Moffat wrote some really good episodes but since he took over the helm, quality has dived.

Anyway, I’d like to see a much older actor take over the role. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jackson Lake / David Morrisey back.

Smith has been a reasonably proficient Doctor, but I can’t say that I ever really warmed up to him. It might have been because I liked Tennant so much. It might have been because the other names that cropped up when the search was on for Tennant’s replacement were so intriguing that I was a little crestfallen when this newcomer swooped in and claimed the job. I’m eager to indulge in yet another round of rampant speculation.

Very happy. I’m fed up of wild and wacky Doctors, can we have something different?

It’s science fiction/fantasy fiction. The hallmark of the good stuff as opposed to the crap is that the good stuff stays true to the rules they set up. The good stuff is internally consistent. Without that suspension of disbelief is impossible.

Yes, Doctor Who gets away with a lot under the timey whimey and look monster run banners. We forgive a lot out of affection for the character and the franchise. Still we hope for this show to be in the good stuff group.

(Yes, I understand that the Valeyard and the limited number of regenerations parts of the canon are difficult corners to have been painted into. But that does not mean they can be ignored or dealt with to casually.)

I’d love a middle aged red headed woman … with the first line looking in the mirror being “Finally I’m a ginger.”

Maybe, like in the Highlander universe, the Doctor acquired the life force of all the other Time Lords when he wiped them out, and therefore has nearly infinite regenerations.

His best efforts were in his first series and that was due mainly to the awesome chemistry that was had between Smith, Darvill and Gillan. It steadily decreased in quality.

I loath Clara and please can she die before the Doctor.

I think Clara’s great. The whole, splitting herself up to save the Doctor every time was a bit silly, but I like the character. For reasons I can’t articulate, she seems more like a real person than some of his more recent companions.

I’ve been watching some of the older Nu-Who episodes, and they just remind me how much better I liked Tennant over Eccleston and Smith. And I did/do like both of them. I think Tennant just had a better acting range than the other two. Also, I’ve been put off lately by how silly Matt’s Doctor has become.

Also, as for the 12 regeneration limit; It can be overcome, but it takes technology to do it. The Time Lords obviously had the technology, but in classic-Who there were others who got their hands on it, so I think it’s safe to say when the actor who will play the 13th doctor wants to quit, if the show is still getting good ratings, then the Doctor will find someone with a machine which will let him have more regenerations.
