Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees died today following complications of intestinal blockage. I’m not a big Bee Gees fan, but I did the OP just so I could say that it’s a tragedy that he didn’t stay alive. OK, I’ll be leaving now.
So who had him in the Celebrity Death Pool? 47 points.
(I’m glad you didn’t make any references to lights going out in Massachusetts, edwino)
Huh…I saw a blurb on CNN Headline News that said, “STAYING ALIVE: Maurice Gibb suffers heart attack during surgery.” Looks like the guy in charge of the news crawl will get fired soon…
Well, I for one feel saddened that he died so young, at 53. I am going to put on my Best of Bee Gees cd. I love their early songs, like “Holiday,” “Words,” and “I Started a Joke.”
Godspeed, Maurice.
Yeah, I was a Bee Gees fan until Saturday Night Fever. Disco ruined some good bands.
Untimely death. Bummer.
Not only that but they keep mispronouncing his name wrong too. Some people call him Maurice (whoot-whoo!) but it’s actually pronounced “Morris.”
So now an entire lifetime of music and songwriting (the Bee Gees were writing and performing since they were children – they even wrote the theme to an Australian TV show when they were in their early teens – not to mention that SINCE the 70’s they’ve put out several decent albums) is reduced to a 20 second blurb about how some guy was in some disco band and they don’t even bother to pronounce his name right.
I went to see the BeeGee’s play in dublin in 1998. they were absolutely incredible.
I’m not a fan of their disco stuff, but I really love the early stuff, and I think “Words” is one of the best pop songs ever written.
Although Maurice wasn’t the major contributor to the song writing, I recommend people listen to “Closer than Close” from their last non-greatest hits album released. Its just a sample of what Maurice could do.
I grew up with the Bee Gees music. They were sort of a sidebar to the most popular bands of the day but always around and always good; routinely staking claims to the charts. Great guys as well, in my opinion.
Really saddened to hear this. Goodbye, Mo.
From what I heard, he had a congenital intestinal blockage, and during the surgery he had a heart attack…
Then yesterday I read something online saying there was no heart attack at all, and he was recovering.
Then later I see BBC Online saying he was not recovering at all.
Last night CNN Headline News’ blurb “Stayin Alive”.
Then this morning I hear he’s dead.
Its been back and forth I guess, I guess you can’t come back from that one

A very understandable error I think. My name is spelled Marc but you’d never guess that it is actually pronounced Mike.
Marc
I think Bart Simpson said it best:
“That’s terrible!..in principle…”
Do you suppose his doctor told him “You’re not…you’re not…stayin’ alive…stayin’ alive…”?
I
Damn…
I love the beegees…
Two of the Gibb brothers. Two of the Wilson brothers. Two of the Beatles.
Boy, do I feel very, very old.
Denis Leary is happy.
I’m saddened by this. I’m not usually bothered when celebrities die but this one got me. Saying the Bee Gees legacy is disco would be like saying U2’s legacy was Zoo TV. They were great songwriters.
Very true, but you haven’t been a prolific singer/songwriter for the last 30+ years, eh? (I mean, everyone knows how to pronounce “Sade.”)
They were pronouncing it correctly by the morning anyway, and adding a bit more background. (I’m suspecting there was a more thorough press release or something.)
voguevixen, I love you. When I was reading the obituary yesterday, I was imagining the threads that might be started here over this.
I was dreaming of starting one “Some people call me Maurice” with the first line of the OP being something like “but now they call me dead”.
So then I had Steve Miller in my head for the rest of the day.
And I had no idea it was not pronounced “Moe-Reese.”
That is odd, the radio station this morning said Andy Gibb of Beegee’s fame had a birthday today. I am not a fan of the Beegee’s but I assume they are brothers if not related closely. That has to be a real downer to have a birthday the day a close relative dies.
Are you sure they said Andy Gibb dorkus? He was their younger brother who died of a heart condition in 1988.
They would probably still announce his birthday. I know I’ve heard it before. “Today Andy Gibb would have been xx years old”
