May 12, 1982

Eighteen years ago today, my sixth grade class went on a field trip to the Nabisco factory. I was the one with a tape deck. On the ride home, I recorded my classmates, one by one. They each gave their names and a greeting, some of them crude, some of them childish attempts at depth. Barbara Flynn said “We’re gonna beat the Hawks!” (The defending softball champions that her team was up against that weekend. Don’t remember who won.) Larry Breault gave one of his famous burps. Lee Thompson sang “Shaddup Your Face”; remember that one? I marked the tape “May 12, 1982”. I kept it all this time, and today I played it back. Surprisingly, it hadn’t deteriorated much. Mr. Rilch and I split a gut.

Anyone else have incriminating audio or video?

I have an old video of me with carport (mall) bangs.

Does that count?

The band I used to play in (The Self-Righteous Brothers) headlined a 4th of July party two years ago. It was out in the country and we got started really late. By that time there was little alcohol left, so our singers made a deal with the crowd that if enough beer was brought to the stage we’d play the rest of the show butt-nekkid. Enough beer was brought up and all seven of us finished the show completely bare.

I have (I HOPE!) the only video of the event.

There used to be photos on our website, but I made the webmaster take them off - if any of my students got a hold of that I’d be finished…

For any of you from the Pacific Northwest (specifically in the area for Portland television broadcasts) you may know of a show called…yes…Ramblin’ Rod.

I as a young girl was on this show, and yes, I made a fool of myself.

My parents still have a copy…I pray for the day it mysteriously disappears for good…oh, the shame and horror when that video finds its way into the vcr.

I have an audio tape of my kids, pre-teen years – Tracy is strumming a guitar and murdering The Green Green Grass of Home and the boys are doing their Fat Albert impressions.

Thanks for bringing this up – I should make copies before it disintegrates.

Yes, Pam: that’s really what I was getting at. Videos go from “so last year” to embarrassing to archival. If you keep them long enough. Don’t jettison them!

I have a Christmas video, recorded at my aunt’s house. I showed it to a therapist, so he could see my family’s dynamic for himself.
