May the programing director of ESPN to sleep with the fishes (short World Cup Rant)

SportsCenter on 1. Fishing on 2. Fucking fishing? Spain and Ireland are playing. How the Hell can you not cover that? ESPN 2 will televisive fucking curling, cheerleading championships, and “strong man” contests. THINK! You are a SPORTS NETWORK. The World Cup is far more interesting than watching two guys discussing which spinner large mouth bass will bite on.

Fuckin’ A. I guess I’m watching it in Spanish on Univision.

erm, if a moderator could take out the “to” in the thread title, I’d be very gratefull.

ESPN and ABC are both owned by the same company (Disney). So I don’t know that ESPN has a lot of control over what they show. That is, if ABC wants to show it first run, they may get that choice over ESPN. (Especially since the US Open is on channel 8… they may be trying to compete with it.)

I find fishing extremely boring, mostly 'cause I hate seafood of all types. I find watching fishing on TV even more boring.

Still beats soccer though

What!? You knew someone would say it.

ABC, ESPN, ESPN 2, shoot even FSN. You would think that one of them would televise the most popular sporting event on the planet.

No spoilers here, but not covering Ireland and Spain? Very good matchup and one in which segments of the US population may care.

As a college hockey fan, I have heard many similar rants about the lack of TV coverage of college hockey. Here’s an important thing to keep in mind: Most of the time, when ESPN2 is showing something godawful, and you don’t understand who could possibly be watching it, they’ve been paid to televise it. This is true of the cheerleading championships (although I think I do know who watches those) and maybe of fishing as well, I’m not 100% sure. Sad but true, ESPN would rather televise something that has paid them guaranteed money to show it, no matter what the ratings, then show a sport with what they would consider “borderline” popularity (ie, too popular to pay them, but not popular enough to get them good ratings).

I have heard as well, that fishing shows… while in my opinion lame, boring and completely useless… actually get pretty decent ratings (at least compared to other things the channel shows)

I have no numbers to back this up, its just one of those things I remember reading somewhere.
