Mayweather vs Maidana Sat Sept 13th

I wonder who will be the next stiff Mayweather will outpoint in another boring decision.

Actually, cancel that - I couldn’t care less who the next stiff Mayweather decisions is. The only fight I want to see is one where Mayweather is knocked out and humiliated. And as mentioned, Mayweather won’t fight anyone who has any chance to do that.

Who do you think he should fight that has a chance to do that?

Godzilla

May I ask why the antipathy for Mayweather? I’m not a big fan of his, but I do think he’s proven beyond any doubt that he is one of the greatest fighters to step into the ring. He’s always been careful, and always been a boxer, not a slugger. He’s still phenomenally accurate with his punches and his power shots are devastating. Maidana had a good chance to do what you wished, but Mayweather (as I stated earlier) can take a punch. I do wish he’d retire, however, before he has to crawl out of the ring.

He has awesome defense, accurate counter punching, excellent control of the ring, etc.

But watching him fight is like watching the King of Slap Boxing. He can hit hard but he doesn’t throw very often. Lately he seems to pick and choose opponents to pad his record. His ego is as big as his boxing skills.

To me he is a brilliant boxer and businessman (the reason for his record) but a very boring fighter. Which is why I haven’t paid to watch him fight since De La Hoya.

And he is an asshole. Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Wikipedia

An unrepentant asshole. Floyd Mayweather Dismisses Domestic Violence History as H...

He has dodged tough competition throughout his career, not just recently.

I don’t like the guy, but he is unquestionably among the best boxers of all time.

Deadspin had a good rundown (the Wikipedia section doesn’t really do the situation justice). He’s basically a garbage human being.

ETA: Also, since I think it’s funny, it seems like he’s functionally illiterate: Floyd Mayweather trying to read.

Yes, he’s a great fighter, and I still can’t stand him. For reasons documented elsewhere in the thread by Boogly and others, and also because of something I mentioned above. He dodges anyone who has a chance to beat him. Witness his behavior with regards to a Pacquiao fight. Pac-Man had a better-than-average chance to knock him out - therefore Mayweather stalled and did everything imaginable to be sure the fight never came off, or didn’t come off until after Pacquiao was burned out or knocked out fighting other fighters. All the while bragging about how great he was.

Ali pulled that kind of act for twenty years, and, while it got rather stale, at least Ali fought the best available. Mayweather does the same act, but only fights those who he is sure cannot beat him. The best available - Pacquiao - Mayweather runs away from, even though Pacquiao is a blown up flyweight. But he could hit, so Mayweather ran away scared.

It’s almost to the point that I wish to see him carried out.

I don’t really care who he fights. Mayweather has lost any chance to have that happen. I know, big deal, he has all the money in the world, but that’s for now, as a violent, egotistic asshole and his money soon are parted. But I am not going to PPV even to see him knocked out. If and when it happens, which it probably won’t, I will watch the replays on YouTube or something and sneer at him while I wait to hear that he is in prison or dead,

Yeah, and it was more than just Pacquaio.

When Miguel Cotto was in his prime, Floyd ducked him. He didn’t fight Cotto until after everyone thought Cotto was a shot fighter. When Margarito was terrorizing the division (before we found out what a cheat he was), Floyd ducked him. When Paul Williams was blitzing everyone he fought, Floyd wouldn’t fight him. When Mosley was still at the top of his game, Floyd wouldn’t fight him.

But, at least in those cases, the fights he did take were the bigger money fights. Boxing fans knew de la Hoya was old and done, that Hatton and Gatti were completely outclassed, but we understood that those were big money fights, so it was understandable for Floyd to fight them rather than legit contenders.

But he doesn’t have any excuses for not fighting Manny. That was the biggest money fight and the most credible challenger, and Floyd ducked him pretty shamelessly.

Exactly. We expect fighters to go for the biggest payday. Floyd turned down the biggest payday because of the risk. It has tainted his career. People will forget his assholery in his private life, but ducking Pacqiuao will be a virtual asterisk on his record.

I don’t follow sports figures closely and was unaware of Mayweather’s serial thuggery. Why he hasn’t spent more time in jail is probably the result of being able to afford good lawyers and pleading the charges down to misdemeanors. Sports is full of decent people who can limit their rage and aggression to the arena, but some, like Mayweather and Tyson act out no matter what the venue. Violent sports stars have been given a pass for far too long. It starts in high school (or earlier) and is allowed to continue throughout their lives, it seems.

As for dodging good fighters: it’s something that a lot of fighters have done and will continue to do. Losers don’t make money, unless they’re promised a big payday for getting into the ring with a killer, and even then may not do it because of the damage to their rep. People dodged Tyson like he had ebola. Late in his dying career, Tyson took a fight with someone I can’t remember and even thanked the guy “for the payday” in his post-defeat interview. Manny was lethal in his prime and I’m surprised anybody would get into the ring with him then.
