It was a lousy end to the fight but there is no such thing in boxing as a sucker punch, and the referee had clearly signalled that the fight was on. ** Defend yourself at all times. **
Mayweather’s sudden blowup with Larry Merchant in the post-fight interview was even more disgraceful - not that Mayweather ever had any grace to begin with. I’ve always loved watching him as a fighter, but the guy is such an asshole, he makes it hard to root for him.
Pacquaio vs. Mayweather would probably be the ultimate Good vs. Evil boxing fight of the last 30+ years. The guy is such a classless POS and Pac is like a god in his homeland I can only imagine millions of non-boxing fans would tune in to this fight just to (hopefully) see Pac beat him into submission.
If Mayweather “retires” without fighting Pac he will always be referred to with an invisible asterisk as the guy who was afraid of fighting his perfect rival.
Well yea, this is what is destroying boxing. Whatever happened to “bring it on”? It used to be that you fought whoever was the best contender and then the loser would be ready to sign for a rematch the next day. I really miss Ali’s “Bum of the Month Club” and Larry Holmes taking on whoever was willing to fight him.
I can’t really blame Mayweather on that one. He did what he was supposed to do. Ortiz apparently forgot he was in boxing ring and thought he was in a kissing booth.
Mayweather’s act was extremely low class, but he is a boxer so low class is where he comes from. I would be inclined to think less of him, had he not been picking Ortiz to pieces.
I remember years ago watching Aussie light heavy Bobby Dunlop carving up an opponent. He stopped punching and looked at the referee 3 times before the fight was stopped. Only time I can remember a boxer showing any class at all.
I don’t know; I’m not a big boxing fan and I don’t root for either of them but watching that video a few times it looks like Ortiz was guilty of being sloppy and letting his guard down. Was Mayweather’s shot sneaky? Perhaps. Was it fast? Absolutely. He was in there like a laser. Ortiz got caught slipping.
I’d love to see it but I’m not holding my breath. I got to meet Floyd when I was 18 and boxing competitively. He was super nice to me; didn’t come off as smug or egotistical. Short, but super nice. It’s hard to root against Pacquaio though, he’s a wonderful person outside the ring.
I heard about the controversy, don’t like Mayweather, but I think he did exactly what he was supposed to do.
It’s boxing, this is how you apologize, you hold a glove out to touch. If the guy accepts the apology, he touches gloves, if he doesn’t, you pull the glove back and defend yourself. What you don’t do is stand in front of him with your arms outstretched.
I really thought it would be a dirty shot, instead I got an idiot practically begging to get KO’d.
Agreed, it’s already a bit too late, imo. And it’s really Pacquiao who now seems to be slowing down. Despite one-sided scores, he couldn’t knock out the recent 2nd-rate fighters he’s faced. I suppose he could have floored Margarito if he wanted to at the end, but the last fight where he looked like the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world was against Hatton or maybe Cotto. One could even argue that his peak was back in '07 against Morales. Admittedly, he has been moving up in weight, but still.
If the fight ever happens, it will be two weathered fighters past their primes. And as much as I hate to say it, Mayweather would probably win. In fact, I think it’s very possible that Manny might lose in 6 weeks to Marquez.
Ya know, that was the first time I saw the video after reading quite a bit about the incident - way more than I’ve read about any boxing match at all in a long time, to be honest.
And I can’t for the life of me figure out what Mayweather did wrong or what Ortiz was thinking. He attempted to apologize 3 times, was rebuffed (with a slight glove tap the second time), and then just stood there well after the fight had been restarted? What an idiot…
How long should Mayweather have waited for Ortiz to defend himself?
What the hell is Ortiz at there? It reminded me of some kid in the ring with his idol, apologising that he might of upset the other guy. Fuck that, did he think he could win or not, save the hugging until after you have won the fight. He was acting like it was an exhibition fight.
Mayweather was there to win the fight, he saw a shot and he took it. Fair play to him.
Well yea, exactly. This wasn’t a sparring session. When a guy intentionally head butts you your natural reaction isn’t to make-out with him. Do you think Holyfield wanted kisses from Tyson after he tried to bite his ear off?
Strange that the referee turned away. I’m thinking that he should have been between the fighters in such a volatile situation and made sure that they resumed the fight with both having their defenses up.
Ortiz did something really, really stupid and paid. Anybody that faults Mayweather and has gotten a minute of enjoyment while watching MMA should be ashamed.
