I’ve been all sick and for some reason I had an MC Hammer dream where me and Hammer were hanging out at an airport and getting all chummy and friendly. It was a nice dream. So I looked up his “U Can’t Touch This” video and jesus lord with his pants and dancing that is a video for the ages. That was one of the major songs of my childhood. The dude had some grooves. Ain’t no denying that.
In 1998, I went to a Christian music festival(Cornerstone). It was in Bushnell, IL and was a pretty big festival at the time. One of the main stage performers that year was MC Hammer, who was re-establishing himself at the time as a specifically Christian rapper. You can even see part of the show thanks to youtube.
Well, to be honest, no one at that point really wanted or cared to see MC Hammer, but he was the most famous person performing, so everyone stayed to see him. I mean, the dude was in Addams Family(2?).
The crowd moved in on the hill that lead to the main stage. Easily, it was one of the largest crowds of the festival. Hammer? No where to be seen. He’s late. Big time late. Like, not even setting up and he is supposed to be on stage in 5 minutes. The crowd is getting restless, Hammer is no where to be seen.
30-45 minutes go buy, people are chanting, “Hammer! Hammer!” and really getting tired of waiting. Finally, he comes out and sings his opening song. People like it…sort of.
He finishes the song, launches into his second song. What happens? Mass exodus. See, we wanted to see Hammer, but no one actually cared to stay after his opening song. We were all able to check “saw MC Hammer” off our list and other late night shows were going to be starting soon. You know, of people we like and are on time.
So Hammer performs to a big crowd, and had the wonderful experience of watching 50%+ of the crowd walk away while he launched his second song.
It must have depressing as anything from his perspective. I actually felt bad for him.
