McAfee VirusScan refuses to be enabled. XP-Pro SP2 Thinkpad A31

I recently acquired McAfee VirusScan, and when I try to enable it–by clicking “Enable” in the context menu from the taskbar, or by clicking “Click here to enable VirusScan protection” in the damn bloated McAfee Security Center or whatever–it either (a) does nothing or (b) says it’s enabled until I close the Security Center or go to another tab, at which point it goes back to being disabled.

I’m utterly confuzzlated!

McAfee worked very, very well for me until Internet Explorer got corrupted somehow.

I spent over 5 hours over 3 days trying to resolve this. It truly wasn’t, I thin, a McAfee problem, but they fiddled and faddled around and we got nowhere.

Upon advice from this board, I got AVG, for free, which required no POS IE Active-X , and has worked like a charm ever since.

I sincerely suggest you look into it.

Thanks! I don’t use IE, ever, except where it’s required…like when I downloaded VirusScan from the McAfee website. Thanks for the AVG recommend–I am downloading it right now and will give it a shot.
