In Head of State, Lewis refused to debate Gilliam until backed into a corner. Life imitates art . . .
I’m also reminded of 1996, when a despairing Bob Dole took the opposite tack and resigned as Senate Majority Leader to devote full time to his presidential campaign. SNL had so much fun with that: Dole (Norm MacDonald) was being interviewed and was interrupted by the news that Clinton had one-upped him by resigning from the presidency and divorcing his wife, to devote full time, etc. Dole started groping and then said he was undergoing surgery to become a “half-man, half-woman kind of thing . . .”
Obama wants the debate to go on because he knows there isn’t a lot of thought required to vote ‘present’ yet again…
Probably as much thought as went into your posting here. Look I am not a liberal by any stretch–but if your response is the best the right side can come up with then this race is over. I am one of those pesky moderates who decide this damn thing–and right now your candidate ain’t doing much to persuade me that he is the right choice. And posts like yours don’t help matter either.
Then it is not easy to understand how McCain couldn’t even be bothered to do that most of the time for, oh, the past three years or so.
In an effort to see the other side of the story, I was perusing the Free Republic blogs this morning. I haven’t seen this much denial since … I gotta go back to Kevin Bacon at the end of Animal House.
Sarah (never “Sarah Palin”, always just “Sarah”) was spectacular in Couric’s interview; she’s so intelligent and nailed all the issues. And did you know that Couric was a “pinched snot”, whatever the hell that means? Of course, there were the slew of “I bet the Liberal Media would never as Biden that question” posts coupled with the exclamations of greatness for McCain “rolling up his sleeves” while Obama waits to be called.
I keep picturing McCain, sweaty and shirtless, in some steam-filled boiler room in the basement of the Capitol building, with sledge-hammer just a-going to work on that baby.
Ok. Fine. I really went over to read the blogs to get my morning chuckle. I didn’t expect the guffaws, though.
Especially as you are now portraying Obama as the man who rises to intellectual challenges and avoids courses of action that don’t require “a lot of thought.” You might have thought a bit harder before posting.
It’s not a vote, it’s a debate.
Really, if you can zing Obama, go for it; this thread could use some input from the other side. But at least have the zing make a lick of sense.
So now Bush has summoned them both to the White House. Does anyone know whether there are plans to occupy the two candidates after the meeting today, or are they still going to be free to get to the debate?
Got any comments on exactly what the fuck McCain is going to do? This thing looks like it’s going to be wrapped up here this afternoon. I’d LOOOOOVE to hear it. McCain went on Monday from saying everything was fine to today freaking the hell out and making VERY RISKY moves.
What is McCain going to do? He isn’t needed in DC. Nobody was asking for him to come. He just injected himself into the middle of it.
The refusal of your side to address McCain’s erratic behavior reeks of desperation
I think Bush is going to have the Secret Service take both of them prisoner, declare himself king of the US and rule from now on with an iron fist…after he has both the house and senate brought up on charges of treason and buried up to their necks in ant hills after being dipped in honey…
Just a thought.

Do I really have to explain this? Obama will vote ‘present’ on the Senate bailout bill. That’s what he does. Votes ‘present.’
I have been reading this thread over the last day and was wondering when someone would come in and explain this McCain decision. I am willing to be convinced by someone on the right that this is a good thing–but I haven’t read anything that convinces me this is anything but a political ploy. If **Stephe96 **response is the best that that side can come up with then do moderates have any choice but to vote for Obama? I am not buying the ‘have to race back to DC and roll up our sleeves’ argument. Whoever wins this thing better be able to multitask or we are screwed. So Stephe96 you got anything? Anything? Convince me man that your guy is doing the right thing.
Is that even an option in the US Senate?
Really? Is that all you have?
I thought Sarah Palin gave substance-free answers.
You are not very good at posting political advertisements.
Oh my yes. For the first time in, I don’t know, probably ever, I’m actually a little bit sad that it’s going to be ending in just over a month. If it’s going to be this much of a ridiculous circus, this hilariously entertaining a clusterfuck, I’d sort of like to see another couple of weeks of it. A total reversal from a week ago, when I wished November 4 would just get here already. Now I’m feeling like I’m actually going to miss the madness.
I know, I know, the feeling will pass. Another couple of days and I’ll be ready for it to be over again. I’m just sayin’.
Palin’s performance in that interview was just a jaw-dropper. Utterly indefensible. And yet … anybody want to strap on hip waders and a pith helmet, and go browsing some right-wing boards to see how that horrifying display is being regarded by the red-state faithful?
And hey, Stephe96, if you’re going to play, bring some heart to it, willya? Going blandly through the motions like that is pointless for you and boring for us. Step up, man!
Ah, so we’re back to the “present vote” talking point. I love the smell of desperation in the morning…smells like victory!
Invite Bob Barr? Love it!
Or at least know what a ‘Present’ vote means in the Illinois Legislature.
Hint: It means ‘No’ and is recorded as a ‘No’ vote. Every single legislator knows their ‘Present’ vote lands in the ‘No’ tally, effectively working to defeating a bill, but signaling to the bill’s authors that it’s a good idea with flaws that need to be addressed, especially Constitutional issues.
Yeah, fighting ignorance is definitely taking longer than we thought. It’s especially slow-moving when people don’t even bother to try.
