What’s up with that? Did somebody higher up decide “Hey, if we give them the title of ‘manager’ we’ll not have to give anybody raises this year!”?
The reason why I ask is because one of the dumbest people I know started working at Mickey D’s a month ago and she came into the office yesterday (to pick up her baby that her mother was keeping) and was overjoyed that she was made “Area Manager.” When I asked her a bit more it sounded like she was in charge of whatever area she was working in… ala, if she had the fry station, then she’d be the “Area Manager” of the fry station.
Or am I missing something here? Not working there I can’t tell if this is a serious attempt to involve the employees in the business or just a cynical ploy to boost morale. Or both.
They were called floor captains when I worked there. But that was just FC of the grill area, or FC of “The Front” which included the registers, the fry station etc.
I dunno. Sounds to me like they’re trying to hold people accountable by giving them an official title. Tell a 16 year old they’re in charge of something, and maybe they’ll actually do a decent job, that kind of thing.
Personally, I’d rather be manager of the fries than a real manager there again…
When I worked at Burger King I and other established employees had earned the prestigious title of “PRO”, or “Pacesetter of Restaurant Operations”, whoo-hoo! Boy, I was sure rakin’ in the dough after I got that wonderful promotion! ($4.75/hr back when the minimum wage was $3.35).
I would also suspect that this could cause some problems with people who were classified as “managers” before, but now see the value of their title being driven downward.
i agree with ya Dung Beetle. former McHell worker checkin in here too. if i EVER hear anyone say the word ‘hussle’ (sp?) to me again, my right arm is just gonna fly up and smack em hard.
I dunno, EVERY employee at Mickey Ds seems to be SOME kind of manager. My sis has worked at one Mickey D or another for going on 20 years. Seems to me a way for the powers that be to get out of giving raises.
I do know they will use and abuse their employees. They dangle “store manager” in front of my sister, use her to clean up and bring up to par “low performing” stores, and then bring someone else in to be the store manager. This is AFTER she brings the stores to high performance levels.
Only place I’ve ever seen serve Tater Tots is Burger Baron [/hijack]
I don’t see why you can’t be in charge of an area without having the meaningless titles. It’s like they feel I’ll do a better job if I feel ‘appreciated’ even though I’m doing a sucky job for minimum.
Of course for some people it might work. I do a good job whatever I’m doing and don’t try to skip out on it. I know what it’s like having to do the ‘dirty’ jobs without getting what it’s worth. (You try waitressing/bussing a restaurant and filling take out orders on your own on a busy night at the hotel. We did room service too but of course I refused to do that while by myself. I’m not leaving the register unwatched for 10 minutes at night in the middle of downtown.)
I’d feel more like a fool if I got told I’m the ‘area manager’. sheesh… isn’t an Area Manager supposed to be the manager that the managers of a bunch of different stores in a specified area (like a city perhaps, or part of a city if there are a lot of stores there) answer to?
My wife and I went to Mickey D’s the other night and she saw an “Area Manager” at the drive in window. Thinking as you did, she then proceeded to tell the AM how this particular McDonalds was better than the others, and how another McD’s sucked, etc. My wife then observed “Are you short handed? I’ve never known an Area Manager to work drive through - bet you’re going to come down hard on the manager for crappy employee scheduling.”
The poor girl just looked at her (my wife), smiled, and nodded, but still managed to look uncomfortable at the entire exchange. Me? I was barely able to contain my laughter.
