High level McDonalds employee, ever admit it?

Kind of humerous perhaps, is there anyone here that is in the fast food industry, but in a GOOD PAYING position, a general manager or above? Maybe a VP of a fast food/retail company filled with poor paid employees?

For example, you are in a bar, and a lovely woman is interested in you and asks, “What’s your job?” and you tell her truthfully, “I work for McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Subway etc” even though you are a general manager, Vice President making a good salary? Maybe your girl takes you to see her parents and she tells them that you work at Wal mart, even though your job might pay 60,000 USD plus. Yout wo have a lot of laughs from their faces when you thought you were a loser and relieved when you weren’t.

In response to “what’s your job,” if I had a good job, I would reply with my position, and if the discussion warrants it, what I do and for whom I work.

I’m puzzled by the somewhat sniggering tone of your question, and it indicates to me you have had near zero off duty social interaction with anyone higher than fry cook in mega corporations. In my capacity as a commercial real estate agent I have dealt with numerous upper level and mid-upper level decision makers at fast foods, chains and even WALMART/SAMS for some interium leasing during upsizing renovations.

You meet a man in a bar in his mid 30’s and he’s wearing an expensive suit, has an expensive watch, and he looks upper middle class, and sounds well educated, and he tells you he works for McDonalds, are you are going to be silly enough assume he’s flipping burgers or working the fry station?

A few notes:

1: You would be surprised how well mid-upper to upper level mega corp people are paid.

2: They are very proud of what they do and don’t have any problem telling people exactly who they work for.

3: Why would anyone at these firms be “ashamed” of telling someone they work in a mid or upper mid level capacity for billion dollar corporations. A woman in a bar (or her parents) would have to be an complete retard to think that a mega chain regional, district or even (in some cases) a store manager, is not making (or capable of making) a very nice income. When I was with Tandy Corp in the early 80’s, there were Radio Shack store managers in some of the larger urban markets making 100K-200K per year, and this was 20 years ago.

4: When you are making a reasonably good living, it’s one of the most fun things in the world to downplay what you do. I tell my kids if they are asked, to simply tell their friends or teachers, that their daddy sells bricks and dirt, which is quite literally true.

My youngest son recently became a manager for “Ruby Tuesday’s”. For someone in their mid-twenties w/o a college degree he is pulling down a damn good salary + bonus.

Why wouldn’t a mid or upper level employee of a fast-food chain just tell someone what they do? The OP is oblique.

I’m with astro, I just tell 'em I dig holes in the ground for a living.

Why wouldn’t those type of people just say - “I’m upper managment at McDonalds” or “I manage the Walmart down the street”? I agree the OP is slightly odd.

I used to work for The Salvation Army. And when I started there, people would ask, “Do you get paid with change?” Meanwhile, I’m a dept. supervisor pulling in 55K.

Well this makes perfect sense! If you work a lower rung job, or aren’t some kind of exec than you must be a loser!

Sure am sorry to hear that everyone who works for a living at McDs or Wal-Mart or wherever else is a loser. How dare they try to support themsleves or a family. Why should they contribute to the economy. The losers!

Tell you what…Why don’t you tell me what you do and I’ll make fun of it.

I have a friend who works in upper management for a discount retailer, and when she says “I work for DiscountMart”, no one mistakes her for the person who rounds up carts in the parking lot. She doesn’t have to mention her title, it’s clear in her demeanor and dress that she probably earns a high salary.
I would suspect that if she were the person who rounded up carts in the lot, she might say “I work at DiscountMart” just as the fry cook might say she works at McDonald’s and conversely the executive VP might say she works for McDonald’s.

A highschool classmate’s father was a McDonald’s exec, and his house was decorated with the logo embossed on mirrors, crystal candy jars, etc. Tacky yet unashamed.

Me too  Beats having a McJob.
