McVeggie compromise

Just heard last night that McDonalds is testing a new veggie burger made from good stuff in some of its stores, mainly in Pa. I believe.

Right. Well, its good that they are acknowledging that there are consumers out here who like decent food, but its also a ploy to get some vegetarians in the place to spend more of their money to fatten McDonalds bank account!

Hey, if I want a veggie bruger, I can go to the grocery store for it and help support the people who run the veggie food industry, not McDonalds.

Watch it not do well, and McD’s say well, people just don’t want healthy food!

McDonalds already sells veggie burgers in its UK and Irish stores. They aren’t very good, unfortunately (Burger King’s are though).

I don’t tend to eat them very often but there are times and places where there simply aren’t any other options for vegetarians and it’s nice having at least one place around where I can eat something other than chips or a salad.

I think they are just trying to expand their product line to accomdate people who chose a vegetarian lifestyle.

No business does anything with the intention of losing money. It seems to me that it is the very nature of business to attract more business and make more money!

It is your choice as the consumer to purchase their product…and at some level, even McDonalds has to support the “veggie food industry”… they don’t grow their own!

McDonalds is trying to make money off of veggetarians?

Well…isn’t that the whole POINT of a business in the first place-to make moneY?

They’re testing the McVeggie in Pennsylvania? If it’s anywhere near where I used to live, it’s going to sink like a lead balloon. Why, I wonder, didn’t they try it out in a more receptive place, like NYC or California? Do McD want it to fail?

The store in PA – Philly, to be exact-- is selling a “Grilled McVeggie” sandwich, described as

See this article for more details.

Veggie burgers, on the other hand, have been at certain McDonald’s in Manhattan for a year or two now.

I was in Times Square back in October 1998 and wandered by a McDonalds advertising the McVeggie Burger. Being extremely curious, I went and tried it.

I hadn’t bought a burger at McD’s since they still came in those styrofoam packages (remember them?). So, it was tres weird. It wasn’t that bad, though. I’d definitely have it again.

I’ll look for them next time I’m in Philly.

FWIW, I had a veggie burger at a BK in the UK last time I was there, and didn’t like it as much as the McVeggie. But, it’s definitely a step in the right direction, and is appreciated.

This thread should be moved to GQ.

You veggie folk do realize that McDonalds fries are cooked in beef tallow, right?

Umm, they stopped that about ten years ago. Vegetable oil’s where it’s at now.

FWIW, you can get a vegetarian burger at McD’s…just ask for a cheese burger without the meat.
I make sandwhiches like that all the time…mmmm!

They really have to update the sign in my local Mac’s. But it would explain why they taste different.

Uhhh… well, why else SHOULD they do it??

out of love for their vegetarian brethren :stuck_out_tongue:
gag.

Yeah, and the fries don’t taste NEARLY as good now. Especially since they don’t seem to salt them enough. Gah.

mmmmmm … this thread is reviving my love for McFries. That is like the third time in two weeks!!

I know what I am having for lunch today!

I don’t eat much at McDonald’s. As a vegetarian, there’s not much reason to. But, they are ubiquitous, and everywhere, so if I were stuck hungry I might try one of their veggie thangs. It’s a toss up in the thoughtful area. On the one hand, McDonald’s stands for everything I don’t like about the cattle-call food industry. Quick and easy meals are the downfall of decent nutrition. Even if I ate meat, I sure as shit wouldn’t bet my esophagus on that kind of tripe every day.

But, in an effort to move toward a more varied choice on the MickeyD menu, I’d try what vegetarian food they had to offer. Kind of a vote of support for their effort. If they even offer it, it’s heartening to know that their most likely massive market research has made it worth their while to test the waters. So people must want the alternative, in large enough numbers. That’s a bit of good news for me.

Which would make sense, except the whole point of living in Manhattan is that one will never actually have to eat at a McDonald’s out of desperation. Of all the veggie burgers in Manhattan, theirs is second from the bottom of the ladder.

Ah, the joys of big cities - I can just peacefully carry out my vegetarian lifestyle while also living my gay lifestyle and never go to McDonald’s. I wonder if I’m living any other lifestyles I don’t know about…I just thought I didn’t eat meat!

Okay kids, let’s stop at McDonalds to buy youngest son a Happy Meal, oldest son a couple of Big Macs, mom a cheeseburger, and then stop at the grocery store to buy sister a veggie burger.

Sorry sis, you’ll have to eat it cold and raw because we are on the way out of town and just stopped for a bite to eat before we hit the road.

Guess you’ll just have to eat another salad shaker.

Naw, won’t work.

I hope they test-site Utah!!! That grilled McVeggie sounds really good!

I not sure that there needs to be another reason. Isn’t that the main objective for most big businesses?

I just had to say that they have had McVeggie burgers in NYC for at least three years now. They are vile. Just like McPizza and Oyster McNuggets; although, I have had a McVeggie burger when I was in NYC three years ago (last time I was there they were still selling them) and it was the absolute worst veggie burger I have ever had. VOMIT.

HUGS!

Why does the food at McDonalds look like some fat lady sat on it before it is served to you? It never looks like the pictures…maybe next time I will ask what their secret is.
