The types of veggie burgers I like (like the black bean ones) I don’t feel are trying to be “meat” burgers. They’re just another type of sandwich. It’s the Boca Burgers and their ilk that are trying too hard to be a meat substitute.
I love the black bean burgers.
I might be willing to try a vegetarian burger – made from the ground meat of a vegetarian – just for the poetic justice of it. Would definitely at least consider it.
Oh, I gotta add: I LOVE vegetarian jerky snacks. There’s a brand of seitan-based stuff I would absolutely, 100% take over actual meat jerky almost anytime (except, maybe, good jerky made by a good smokehouse). The stuff is perfectly chewy, fatty, salty, and flavorful without the gristle of the real stuff.
I’m an omnivore, but recently started eating veggie burgers because of high cholesterol levels. I’m on medication, but my doctor nags me (gently) about my eating habits: no eggs, very little fatty meats, no shrimp (I thought shrimp was okay and it’s my favorite seafood ) I’ve been eating the Morning Star burgers, and put them on Arnold’s sandwich thins - bread rounds about the size of burger buns, but thin and only 100 calories (multi-grain, whole wheat, or white), with tomato, lettuce, and onion. They’re okay, but are thin and not satisfying when it comes to taste. I’m going to look for Boca burgers; I haven’t tried those. Let’s face it: no veggie burger is going to be as good as a McDonald’s Angus burger, in which I indulge every two weeks or so (with fries too, of course!).
OT: Do some reading about the relationship between dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol. Eggs and shrimp don’t seem to be the culprits for high serum cholesterol and related issues.
So you’re aspiring to be a humanitarian?
Yeah, that’s the ticket. Mmmmm, grain-fed vegetarians.
Hey, ‘grain-fed vegetarians’! Those are what I call ‘cows’!
I love hamburgers, and I love veggie burgers - but like others here, I think of them as two different things. My very favorite are the Morningstar Farms Asian Veggie Patties; lots of recognizable vegetables (carrots are the first ingredient listed) and a little bit of a spice kick - yum!
sure. i eat meat, but i’m trying to eat more vegetarian foods and especially limit red meat. i enjoy the occasional veggie burger and i get veggie subs often. also, i eat a lot of tofu, especially with thai food. yum.
Now, now. Sure, some of these New Age Earth Mamas are a little hefty, but I wouldn’t want to be insulting like that.
My sister used to eat them (she was a vegetarian at the time) and just the smell alone was enough to put me off from ever even considering eating such a thing.
I like the UK Burger King’s veggie burger with cheese and bacon, and real mayo instead of vegan mayo.
It just tastes good.
As a former meat-eater, accidentally getting a taste of it again is a real shock to the system.
We make a veggie meatloaf at the holidays that many meat-eaters like, but it has eggs, so that meat taste is still there.
Morningstar Black Bean burgers are the best! Trader Joes has great veggie burgers, too.
For a very specific, narrow definition of veggie burger.
That it to say, there was one brand of tempe burger that I loved. One flacor, actually- lemon something. Mmm. Then they stopped making it or stopped carrying it or it went non-kosher or something, so for now I just eat the meat. (Not that I’m such a huge fan of meat burgers, either).
Meat-eater – I love the things. I wish I had a good recipe for them, and then I’d eat them all the time. Also big on TVP, and, not a health-nut at all. Just like vegetables, is all.
I buy Boca and Morningstar (I like the asian and fake chicken) burgers every so often because I like them, but as junk food really. They aren’t much more healthy than any frozen dinne.
As far as eating out rarely will I order a veggie burger. Though Fitger’s Brewery in Duluth has the most amazing wild rice burger ever and I will eat one of those every time I’m there over a meat burger.
This. I’ve occasionally eaten chik’n patties cause I was hungry and the SO had 'em on the freezer. I don’t hate them but I wouldn’t eat them unless I was pretty darn hungry.
I used to eat them a lot - but most meat substitutes are gluten filled, and I avoid gluten nowadays.
