I don’t get the recent trend where people on TV spend a lot of time talking about other networks. For example Daily Show / Colbert goes after Fox news a lot. Is that the best they can come up with - to talk about another network? MSNBC also goes after Fox. And of course Fox goes after the other networks as well.
I guess this stuff brings ratings but I have no idea why. Does anyone here watch this kind of stuff? I suppose they have 24 hours a day to fill with something.
TDS/Colbert are comedy shows with a political aspect. Regardless of what you think of Fox News, they are one of the biggest networks and thus are more visible. I mean, pravda.ru probably says some stupid shit sometimes but they aren’t prominent enough in the US to get daily mentions. And yes, sometimes they invite it.
On actual news networks, it is important to differentiate the actual news (even if slanted) vs. the political-themed opinion shows. Hannity gives you news, but it’s primarily a conservative opinion show that talks about current events.
Hell, stuff like the Simpsons, on Fox, makes fun of Fox and Fox News.
I don’t consider the Daily Show or Colbert reports news media. They are after all on Comedy Central not on a “News” network. Stewart/Colbert do have a personal bias but it’s predominantly entertainment. Of course I can see how it can be confused with the news networks given their complete lack of focus on actual objective reporting. Since they are just competing for ratings with talk it’s not surprising they’ve moved on to explicitly talk badly about the competition,
But the whole schtick of The Daily Show is to mock the news media. So of course they’re going to name them. Fox is a common offender but, for instance, everyone was making fun of CNN’s round-the-clock lost airliner coverage long after all the other stations had largely moved on.
Interesting but not surprising. Stewart can be an excellent interviewer (with a lot of experience now interviewing very powerful people) and, by the very nature of his job, he’s obviously attuned to what’s happening in the news world. I’d have been surprised if he took the gig but I’m not surprised to learn that it was offered to him.
Daily Show and Colbert? You’re asking why two shows, specifically and explicitly designed to parody cable news, spend so much time talking about cable news?
What do you mean by “recent”? TDS has been going after other news networks, at least, since Stuart has been there, especially Fox and CNN. However, since Stuart and Colbert have actually gained some influence in political media, in the last five years or so, Fox has been going after them a lot too.
