Media coverage of Woolmer's death

The media’s coverage about Woolmer’s death has been terrible. I assume that there are many others who have less confidence in the media because of their coverage on Woolmer.
First it was reported that he collapsed of stress. Then he committed suicide. Now he has been murdered.
Does the media bother to do any fact-checking these days? Or is it just all rumour and supposition?

Link.

Once upon a time, all news coverage was rigorously fact-checked.

And then, 24-hour news channels appeared, and the world wide web, and news tickers on cell phones, and the need to be first with the news started to outshine the need to be right with the news.

Get used to it. I can’t comment on whether the coverage of Woolmer’s death has been particularily bad. (And I’m not in the news industry).

But it often seems like the news coverage is focused on predicting the news before it happens, so something like Woolmer’s death which was unexpected is handled poorly.

Depends which media you mean. I’ve seen them talking about all the rumours that have been circulating, but no actual claim to know the cause of death, until the police announcement. Although I did raise an eyebrow at ITV News (British TV) tonight when the reporter finished his piece with “…a cricket match that cost Bob Woolmer his life.” So the reporter knows what the motive was?

I am used to it. But that should not mean that I just accept it. We need to do more to get this changed.
